Also no offense but you (anyone) gotta be dumb to use ingame player count for valid arguments since they dont reflect on actual playerbase at all.
First off, you know that current player numbers are the "current" player numbers, right? Just because 530k people are playing right now doesn't mean that only 530k people played Dota 2 today in total. Also, you start off by claiming that Valve is making up the player numbers and then you say the numbers don't count because some people might be idling or just watching a game. Which is it? People idling or the player numbers are completely made up? It's sure funny, Dota 2 is doing pretty great for a game whose playerbase you claim is made up.
Riot Game did a very great job here from my point of view:
-You'll be unable to ping if you spam it
-You get informed and rewarded for having commend each match - Ribbon, badge, Icon, free cosmetic. Your dopamine flow when everyone in loading screen see tips explain baron icon is for those 10% playerbase with great behaviour, and you're the only one have it.
-All the swear word will be censored, and you can even make it so that the whole sentences will be censored, or just hide the chat bar away.
-Official endless event to help you stress out which also reward you with item that decorate your profile.
After a stressful 80min game of Dota 2, the only thing I see is Report summary, someone got put in LP, and that's it (a small thank you written in grey with two big punish, punish - negative, negative)
I think all of Valve's previous game were like that - let your customer fix your game, there's no need to care. It's like a love-hate relationship with a cold woman. While Riot game start from the point of view of a customer, yes it's not as deep as Dota 2, winning a game doesn't make you feel as rewarded as Dota 2, but it keep your entertainment high because it makes you feel silly even at your own mistake, not getting your feeling, your skin color hurt and sad. Even when I filed an error/bug report, Valve's response is "please inform on the forum, we read and answer all of them" (yeah, okay).
Currently I wish the playerbase would reduce further, so that it'll feel more warmer like DoTA (255 player in a room, if you don't like it, just quit, or bumping item and make an unpredictable comeback, there's no need to cursing someone to dead because I know if you meet them in real life, YOU won't say that, unless you've prepared and ask for it).
DoTA 6.52c best youth of my life, before Clock release I think.
You know that every external site reads the numbers from a Valve API?
Also, I just commented on the numbers regarding the actual status of Dota2. First of all player count itself is not reflecting the health of a game.
In addition the quoted numbers are not telling the actual player numbers. It assumes that behind every account which has been played with at a specific day there is a single player and he really plays the game. But this is not true. Smurf accounts, also farming bots, troll accounts, trader only accounts, spectator accounts, bot players etc. are also accounted for.
The numbers don't tell anything about changes in the player base but just the "active" account numbers. Only with some records about the use of the accounts it would make sense to regard them for any analysis. In favor or disfavor for the game developers. E.g. the question how long a new created account is active. If there are a lot of players coming over from HotS but don't stay for playing Dota2 that would be an interesting question. The pure number doesn't tell a story.
Sure there are smurfs and bots in Dota 2, but not enough to put any sort of significant dent in the playerbase. I've seen bot players before, mostly in co-op bots back when it was still sorta popular. I know their scripts, behaviors and how they work. In the past year, I played only one single game that had bot players in it.
Edit: And I just checked the steam statistics, Dota2 is still #2 most played game at least right now. So it could be worse.
Want example of dead game?
Go to online mode of Warhammer 40000 space marine
And also there are just too much game to be played, many people do. Thats why Dota players are dropping
Calling game dead because you (or someone) left however is just plainly dumb.
Lately i noticed a big drop in player count as well. Cant find any more a ranked roles for 50 minutes (past 3 days i didnt play RR, since i waited few times for around an hour for a game)
And people are leaving cause theres a lot of other games, and Dota 2 dev team do a poor job at keeping dota 2 playable lately.
