How does "avoid player" work?
I marked a player to avoid and he was in my next game. I don't know about you but that's not "avoiding" to me.

It is a "preference" to avoid a player, not a guarantee. Given that you recently proudly bragged that you had a behavior score of one out of 10,000, it is very likely that your matchmaking pool is much smaller than other players' pools due to your behavior.

You can't mark opponents, but when you mark someone they can still appear on the other team

What? No!

The way it probably works, is taking their grace-points from reports/commends, and using that number, as number your profile stays away from. That specific number. ? but also tests you in games with similarly numbered people.

do you have a citation on where it says it's just a preference? [funnily enough rock paper shotgun linked this topic, so that's how I got here.]

As far as I can tell, the only time I've seen the players I've avoided is on the enemy team.

It's hilarious that RPS is citing this thread from a player (OP) who has proudly bragged about having a behavior score of one out of 10,000.

They also cite that trashblog TheVerge, which conveniently doesn't even have comments or discussion on the articles because then people would be able to point out what a pile of garbage it is.

I've been matched with a player I avoided before and other users have reported being matched with players they have avoided, so either it is not a 100% guarantee or it does not 100% work as advertised, which is basically the same thing but is probably also why Valve has listed it as "experimental."

Jay Castello of RPS copying & pasting the same "ermagerds Volvo is forcing players to pay hurr durr!" as T.C. Sottek of TheVerge is melodramatic trash copying melodramatic trash and it's obvious that neither of them play Dota or have a basic understanding of how matchmaking works. Either that or they have an axe to grind and are intentionally and maliciously leaving out critical information about the matchmaking system for cheap clickbait.

Avoid player option was a suggestion of mine years back. I want to thank valve from here that finally they implemented it. It's working like a charm and I enjoy dota much more. I don't know why rockpapershotgun article says that the system is not working? If I dont want to play with a specific person I simply won't be playing with him. Simple as that. Those crying that the system is not working are toxic players who can't find any matches because being avoided by all the sane people. Justice served.
