That's not what you need to pay to get to 1000. I spent 150-200$ last year to get to 1267, and i definitely could've spent less to get to 1000.

The more you spend early on, the more you can make through wagering etc. You end up making a lot of levels through the custom gamemode (released soon), wagering, quests and etc.- I bought all the collectors cache sets (excluding very rares), and the summer bundle (130 levels total if you recycle treasures) for 25$. though i bought the base 10$ bp. My internet's far too slow to even download the update or anything rn but I believe the pricing is quite similiar this year.

Yeah turns out its much harder to get levels now that there's no recycling system. You used to get a 200-300 level boost by level 750 to get to 1000, but Valve wants you to buy levels instead. Although there are more and perhaps better rewards this time.
