I ONLY HAVE BEEN PLAYING DOTA FOR A SHORT TIME AND I WOULD LIKE A MORE CLEAR DEFINITION ON THE HEROES SELECTION SCREEN ON WHAT HEROES ARE WHAT IF WE GOING TO GET PUNISH FOR NOT SELECTING CORRECTING BASE ON THE ROLE YOU GET WHEN MATCHING A GAME.

Pos.1 - Safe lane
Pos.2 - Mid lane
Pos.3 - Off lane
Pos.4 - Soft support
Pos.5 - Hard support

Shouldn't take it too seriosly though, everyone still can help with wards etc.

You can select to show only heroes of a specific role in hero selection screen, at the bottom i think. Hard and soft support are best under "support" category, off lane has a lot of tanky, or "durable" heroes, and soft lanes has all the carries, labeled as "carry". Mid has a specific selection of heroes and i GREATLY dont recommend you go mid if you are new. They generally require most skill and are most important in a game. Support roles are best for begginers.

soft sup can be roamer and buy items like greaves vessel, offlaner tanky items and hard support warding and helping his carry to farm well

If you are support your job is to play man on man on enemy heroes.

Cores are supposed to play man on towers / racks / rosh.
