Pray to RNGJesus. Is basically random where it hits.
Wait, random like what?

It hits random points in an aoe. Maybe it will hit the enemy, maybe it wont. Nothing you can do. The skill is like that.

use fog advantage or hide in the back of a tree. OR SOMETHING THAT CAN MAKE YOU INVISIBLE TO THEM on a clash.

Random like in random. Every 0.1 second there is an explosion at the random spot of Freezing Field. Each explosion is a circle with a radius of 300 units. Wait, did I say random spot? Well, as most things in Dota it's not true random but pseudo-random.

Every explosion spawns within random distance from CM between 195 and 785 units. The Freezing Field circle is divided into 4 quarters. The first explosion is guaranteed to appear in the north-east quarter. Then it proceeds counter-clockwise, second explosion is in the north-west quarter, third south-west, fourth south-east, fifth north-east etc.

Heroes closer to the center are more likely to be hit by more explosions and therefore will on average take much more damage than those on the edge. It's pretty effective up to ~500 radius, then the average DPS starts to drop drastically and on the edge is only about 50% of the center DPS value.
