No, Dota isn't a LoL clone the two fanbases just hate eachother with a passion, this is because of two things, the original start of the feud back in Dota Allstars/Dota 1, and a hate boner while trying to prove which game is better.
Back when Warcraft 3 was made a mod was created for it named Defense of The Ancients named Dota. A number of people worked on this mod including Pendragon and Icefrog. Icefrog was the latest dev for the mod, and now dota 2, while pendragon quit working on it and went to work on LoL. League was released before dota 2 was released as a standalone game for valve, but before this a feud emerged between the original dota fanbase and the LoL fanbase due to some very aggresive advertising from the owner of the Dota site, which I believe was Pendragon at the time.

By the time dota 2 was announced and released LoL already had a stable fanbase and received heavy criticism, but as Dota's fanbase began to grow it was obvious that it wasn't leaving any time soon. Now because the games share similar origins the two fanbases constantly argue on which is the rightful succesor to Dota 1. LoL fans argue that it is the Spiritual succesor to Dota 1, and the future of the game and that dota 2 sits in the past. Dota fans argue that the game is more mechanically complex and the rightful direct succesor to Dota 1.
Whether you will like the game is personal preference tbh. I've played both games and I prefer Dota 2, but I started with it, so I didn't need to adjust from LoL. IMO it's alot easier to move into league than it is into dota. If you are a fan of the moba genre and have patience to learn the game (Not playing a few matches and then deciding it sucks) then you'll likely love dota 2. All heroes are free from the start so you won't have to grind for a hero or break down and spend money pointlessly. We don't have runes and mastery pages, everything is decided in the game by skill/picks alone.
