I also recommend starting with 2 hunters and 2 witches for balance. If you have less than 4 players, it might feel empty. However, I often see custom servers running with only 2 or 3 players.
One last thing - keep in mind that Steam achievements will only register on official servers.
If you are hesitant, can always buy this game when it goes on sale. hth
We had fun playing with 4-6 people when we were first learning the game, but the witches were teasing and scaring the hunters rather than just staying hidden to keep things interesting with that few people.
I'd definitely stick to the smaller maps too, or pick an area of the larger maps to hide in.
(Everyone needs their own copy of the game). Then you can create a custom game. Your computer would act as the server for a custom game. Your server running on your LAN = best connection :)
The compromise is that you will not get the Steam achievements or the props registered as "collected". I do not think skins items drop either. But I believe you will be allowed to level up to Level 72.

In Fill a Pot, witches are tasked with filling up cauldrons around the map with specific props, while the hunters must protect these cauldrons for the entirety of the match. A witch can stand by a cauldron for a few seconds to activate it, allowing them to discover what prop is required to fill it. The witch must then sneak around the map searching for the prop, switch into it and then head back to the cauldron (all while the Hunters are chasing them). By default, witches have four lives each and must fill up three of the five cauldrons to win.
It's competitive and intense, but great fun in smaller groups!
Thanks again for all the input. It was very helpful.
