Worth playing with only 2-4 players?
My family is limited to very slow satellite internet and cannot do multiplayer online gaming. However, we have multiple gaming PCs in our living room hooked up via physical LAN cables for LAN parties. and, in this way, we have a ton of fun LAN gaming with family and friends with games supporting a small number of LAN players, such as Deep Rock Galactic, Outwards, Portal Knights, UT series, Toxikk, Borderlands 2, EDF series, Don't Starve Together, Raft, Terraria, Vermintide 2, and many others.

In the opinions of the community, would Witch It! be worth playing in this manner, i.e., via private session with only 2-4 friends? Or would it feel too big/empty? Thanks!

It might be worth trying. Start with the smaller maps, ex. Grunewald at Night, Morgenstund, Fiskersted. Can work up to bigger maps once familiar with the skills.

I also recommend starting with 2 hunters and 2 witches for balance. If you have less than 4 players, it might feel empty. However, I often see custom servers running with only 2 or 3 players.

One last thing - keep in mind that Steam achievements will only register on official servers.

If you are hesitant, can always buy this game when it goes on sale. hth

Can you play this game over LAN? I thought it only went through their servers... but maybe it does once the private game is set up, I've never looked into that.

We had fun playing with 4-6 people when we were first learning the game, but the witches were teasing and scaring the hunters rather than just staying hidden to keep things interesting with that few people.

I'd definitely stick to the smaller maps too, or pick an area of the larger maps to hide in.

The game needs to authenticate everyone's logins with Steam.
(Everyone needs their own copy of the game). Then you can create a custom game. Your computer would act as the server for a custom game. Your server running on your LAN = best connection :)

The compromise is that you will not get the Steam achievements or the props registered as "collected". I do not think skins items drop either. But I believe you will be allowed to level up to Level 72.

Here is a pic of typical Custom server populations running on a quiet Wednesday night in October. Server populations in general are low right now until the next big update. So these numbers will go up at other times of the year, especially in December with Winterdream event.

Thanks! That's very helpful. This is definitely in consideration.

In addition to the points above, our "Fill a Pot" mode was specifically designed for 2v2 gameplay (although the team sizes can change) - it's a little more complicated than the standard modes but great fun once you understand the general map layouts and skills.

In Fill a Pot, witches are tasked with filling up cauldrons around the map with specific props, while the hunters must protect these cauldrons for the entirety of the match. A witch can stand by a cauldron for a few seconds to activate it, allowing them to discover what prop is required to fill it. The witch must then sneak around the map searching for the prop, switch into it and then head back to the cauldron (all while the Hunters are chasing them). By default, witches have four lives each and must fill up three of the five cauldrons to win.

It's competitive and intense, but great fun in smaller groups!

Hmm, seems I need to give Fill a Pot another chance, I didn't realize it was for small groups.

fwiw I picked up 3 copies and will probably add a 4th if/when I can get PC #4 to boot up without crashing. So far, we've only tried it 2-player, but even that was great fun on the smaller maps and with time limit set to 10 minutes. We will add a 3rd player tonight.

Thanks again for all the input. It was very helpful.
