Oculus rift black screen with hourglass
For the most part the game works great. But sometimes when loading a map or the lobby I get a black screen with hourglasss in the rift. The game works in the monitor and tracks but the rift is black with the hourglass. The only way out of it is to bring up steam VR and force close the game and start it again.

Sometimes this happens the first time I exit the lobby to go to a map, other times I can play for a long time without it happening. Yesterday (wednesday) noon it was happening all the time, yesterday night not so much. Other steamVR games work great and don't have this issue.

I've only had it happen when my antivirus gets ornery with games connecting to the Internet. Glance at your monitor when it does it.

I've had the same issue - is there a logfile we can pull to try to understand the issue? both steamvr & oculus logs don't seem to throw any errors.

Try the testing branch guys, logs are stored in yoursteamlibrary/steamapps/common/PavlovVR/Pavlov/Saved/Logs

I also have this issue frequently. Usually (but not always) occurs immediately after being killed. I've opted into the test branch, will post logs if I can find something useful.

This doesn't usually take long for me to reproduce; I'm willing to help with some targeted troubleshooting if davevillz has anything for me to try. The game is fantastic, I'd love to help get this fixed so I don't have to restart after every match :D

Some reports suggest that reducing texture quality to medium or low helps in this case

I'll give that a try and report results.
Solipsist Mar 30, 2017 @ 3:45pm
Switched to testing branch [testing_0.9.7a], switched texture quality to low, tried an offline game. Hit the black screen in about 5 minutes.

I don't see a logs folder in {steamlibraryfolder}/steamapps/common/Pavlov/Pavlov/Saved, but I do see one in {user}\AppData\Local\Pavlov\Saved\Logs. Unfortunately it's empty. Anything beyond switching to the testing branch that I need to do to enable logging? A command line flag perhaps?

Please try reinstalling this
SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\PavlovVR\Engine\Extras\Redist\en-us\UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe

if it wasn't installed let me know (install)
Solipsist Mar 30, 2017 @ 6:57pm
Checked UE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe, looks like it had installed. I Uninstalled/reinstalled. Didn't seem to help. Still frequently seeing the problem.

Found something that may be relevant in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\logs\vrclient_Pavlov-Win64-Shipping.txt
though. I tailed it, and popped the headset off immediately after a black screen. Saw this:

This may be an OpenVR bug, possibly related to Haptics. The ViveCraft folks seem to have hit something similar. See here, where you can see the same 'Unknown VRMsgType' error, and also here[github.com].

Looking at that log, i kind of know why it happens, it could be a bug in Unreal, but i need to confirm

Basically when you die, you get this black and white overlay, im wondering if Unreal is rendering the scene twice as im not really using post processing (i should)

Some extra info, FWIW: I had been using SteamVR Beta. I switched out of SteamVR Beta, redid room setup, and have played through a couple multiplayer games without a recurrence.

I can navigate the opening room but when I go online, every time I get a black screen with hourglass on the headset. the room comes up on screen.

Try lowering texture quality to medium, not sure why this is needed but seems to work for alot of people, let me know if it works

Try lowering texture quality to medium, not sure why this is needed but seems to work for alot of people, let me know if it works

Thanks for the reply.

I was on medium. I tried low and it didn't work. Tried HIgh and it didn't work. It won't work in offline mode either. Only works in the opening room. Let me know if you have any other ideas! Thanks
