How does the jetpack work?

Whenever I use it I can only get a small burst which barely sends me upwards or forwards.

Try using it when going down slopes or cliffs. It sucks going up but is amazing going down.

I believe you need to charge it first, like holding down the button.

At least that's what I'd assume, haven't unlocked it myself yet.

I mainly just use it to get on top of things I can barely reach. It did save me from Automons by jumping over a rock yesterday.
