I may be an idiot but could someone help explain these friends codes

I think I may not understand what I am supposed to be doing here. I go to add friend on steam and copy past the codes I see from peoples threads for example 8564-0107 and nothing ever pops up. What am I missing?

the issue i had was there was a special character in my steam name once i took it out all my requests started working

Friend codes expire and are refreshed with a new code fairly quickly. So you may be trying to load expired friend codes.

This, you're not searching the number through Steam, you're searching it with that little search box on the social tab in the menu in-game.

That's not a Steam friend code, that's an in-game friend code. In game can be used for Steam friends, but mostly for crossplay.

Omg thanks. I had crossplay off so I couldnt see where to put in codes. Wow now everything makes sense.
