I pre-purchased this game in October because I adore the original and I was prepared to devote myself to its sequel. But this last minute almost hidden announcement of the game requiring a PS Plus account to play is very disappointing. I understand why the developers did this, Sony is publishing the game and own the franchise so they have to do what Sony demands. But at the same time I am extremely disappointed this was not disclosed earlier and that I will have to refund this.

My choice to refund is a personal one, I am not attempting to convince anyone else to either refund/not play this game. But I felt it important to inform everyone that doesn't already know (like I didn't) that in order to play this game online you WILL BE REQUIRED to have at least a PlayStation Plus Essential account. Which is $10 monthly recurring subscription in the USA. So this game will require a $10 recurring monthly subscription to play online.

For people that already have a PlayStation Plus account I'm sure this is a super 'no big deal'. But I have never owned, nor have any plans to ever own, a PlayStation system. And Sony has a TERRIBLE record of keeping user and account data safe. So I absolutely am not willing to create an account, give them my billing information, and pay them a monthly subscription. Even for this game, which breaks my heart.

I wish the best for this game and its developers. I sincerely hope that at some point in the future it no longer requires a PlayStation Plus account to access. But given that Sony owns the franchise and is publishing the game I'm sure that will never happen. I had been looking forward to playing this game for months and my excitement at its announcement was great. But I will not create a Sony account and pay them a subscription for it. I'm sorry Helldivers, you'll have to go on without me.

OP.. the TL-DR for you here is... yes .. PS players take that abuse. Because.... ask them why, i haven't been able to figure it out.
You won't need a paid subscription to play Helldivers 2 on pc... you can contact dev's customer support (or steam for that matter) and they will confirm it for you.

Did some of you really just wake up from a coma yesterday? Yes, this is nothing surprising. If you're on PS5, you need PSN+ for none f2p online games, this is not news to PS players. It is something they accepted a long long time ago that is regularly listed as one of the downsides of console gaming, because you are OBJECTIVELY paying for nothing but access to the internet you're already paying for. What's even more funny is that you used to get extra stuff with it like free games and it was OPTIONAL.

This has nothing to do with Steam or PC gamers. We do not have to get PSN+ sub. I'm not sure where you got this hilarious info from, but come on man, fact check, this has been discussed before.

I'm a PSN gamer. It's absolutely nothing new that you need PlayStation Plus to play games online on PS4 and PS5. That's been done for years now. But that's where it stops. You are not required to pay for the PC counterpart.

The reason you are required to pay on PS4 and PS5 is because that's how Sony marketed multiplayer, and HELLDIVERS 2 is a multiplayer game. PC has no such subscription for selling multiplayer access, therefore if you don't want to pay a subscription, get it on PC.

I remember when they locked multiplayer behind a paywall on PSN. I wasn't too happy but I was already a recurring subscriber.

I've asked my fair share of dumb questions (not saying this is) in the hopes of finding a solution. This is a very good subject to bring up. If you're new or not, PSN does require a paid subscription to access online services with all games (except F2P). That doesn't affect PC at all though.

ok, here's something, for those who don't know, like the author of the forum who seems to be learning about the plus of playstation for the first time (no hate).

-Free games (F2P) on PLAYSTATION do not require having the plus to play online, however games that cost MONEY do require it and that will always be the case.

-If you are a PC user, it simply does not require any of that, just buy the game, download it and go play online with random people
