What does Sony gain from this?
What's the point of doing this? Public opinion of live service games are very low, especially after the controversy over The Crew's shutdown. This feels like out of touch suits forcing a random update that benefits nobody.

It benefits me.
I can play other games now knowing this one is a dumpster fire.

Rumors are so they can boost PSN numbers because they are down.

Combined with the Stellar Blade and Tsukihime censors, I bet management wants to tank their short term profits and sell stock.

Some mentioned PSN user numbers go up by forcing PC players to create accounts.
I believe they are doing the bidding of their largest shareholder.

It benefits them, so they can show that the numbers of psn users increased. Thats literally the whole reason. Some garbage numbers so the shareholders are happy.

Fiscal year ended on March and the first quarter ends on June. A boost to PSN signups would look really nice if the March report looked bad.

Cheers

They gain more players on the PSN network for free without having people owning a Playstation.

After they lost PSN+ subs from #FreeStellarBlade they want to pad the numbers with more active users. Basically, "look we lost some subs, be we are growing in other ways."

They can boost Playstation player numbers while harvesting userdata. If you don't have a PSN account, it's hard for them to farm the data as it mostly on the steam side.

I don't buy the 'can't ban' users BS. Plenty of games ban people for cheating without requiring a 3rd party account. Maybe it's for banning people for things that Steam wouldn't allow banning for?
Either way, I just removed the game from my wish list, Thankfully I was waiting until I was caught up a bit more on my backlog before buying it.

They get to sell your data, and make it easier to ban you.

Ah, i love the smell of corporate greed. It has such an earthy aroma. You can taste the stink through your nose as it makes your eyes bleed as you gag to avoid vomiting.

Investors like big numbers. Bigger numbers = more money invested.
What will happen when they run out of people to add to the numbers?
Nobody knows. Maybe they'll try selling to aliens, ghosts, or make AI customers.

Yeah it is obvious that Sony wants to increase their numbers and it is especially true now that HD2 has so many players.

PSN numbers are dropping fast so they seem to want to sacrifice this to boost them to appear better - Short term, we all know how it will affect them long term.
