Those people who want to cheat the system will find a way to start and cancel missions then, while legit users who are just taking their time inspecting stratagems and options will get punished.
Lets all actively participate in democracy and just log out when we're done while the devs handle the server loads.
It will stabilize eventually anyhow.
I dont understand how it could take longer than 10 minutes to prepare for a mission. If a player is reading below a 3rd grade level, possibly.
Starting and canceling a mission would not reset the timer as you are still on your ship.
If you don't kill a bug under 1 minute you should be kicked from the game.
Is that simple!

Obviously most people leave the match then, but blowing them up for it is ridiculous.
Sorry man, it's a bad idea. Especially because servers will stabilize as the player count finds a balance. Then we're stuck with a mechanic to blow up ships afterwards :p
15 min timer is good enough, if nothing else, it gets rid of the quite a few people who just forgot they still have the game running and I doubt many people will actually go to macros or rubberband, ther is really no need for penalties and rushing people, this is not a world destroying problem.
It would just be a cutscene of sorts and a kick to the menu. A player wont lose anything over it except their connection to the server. AFK is AFK no matter what you are doing.
Thats even worse idea after another.
Better idea is to get rid of afk timer and increase the server cap to a few million so everyone can get on.
Then we wont have a problem with this in the first place
It's not a server issue. It's a netcode issue. That's not a simple solution and will take time to fix. Meanwhile, a time limit on how long you can stay on your ship is effective and simple.
If you're there, waiting for a friend, you're at the computer and can keep the AFK timer from triggering.
