You can join others with quickplay, and most groups are going to be hospitable. You'll get the odd jackass that kicks you for no reason, and friendly fire is also a thing in this game.
You can play this without a single friend just fine. You might even make some, you never know.
I just bought the game, playing solo / randoms, having tons of fun
I'd strongly disagree. As long as you host or, if you're into the soulslike genre, play solo you'll be fine. Pub lobbies have a tendency to kick new and non meta players.
The only warning I'd give to a prospective player is that the Major Operations (the missions the entire playerbase works on together) are currently pretty broken.
Having a group of friends obviously makes for team play better. But you can pug it with others. Most of the community is decent.
Thats like the only thing I can think of right now that might be a downside. The game itself is very good for the price
From my knowledge so far it's only fun with friends, very repetitive, nothing new after x-amount of hours and that's it.
It's just doing missions, the story is mostly meta. Its weird that you would say nothing new after X amount of hours since that is technically true of every game but regardless they are adding new stuff to the game, such as mechs, APCs, mission types.
The fun of the game is the emergent nature of the gameplay and the challenge of the missions.
Its more fun with friends but a really good PuG experience as well.
I've got over 60 hours in, 90% of that playing with randoms using quick play. Gone up to difficulty 7 so far and most players have been great. Only been kicked like twice, and one of those times may have been because I accidentally blew up my teammates. Also only have dealt with a couple of trolls intentionally teamkilling. If you accidentally kill your teammates just respawn them, most people understand that accidents happen in this game, its not a big deal.
Playing with randoms is still 100 times better than playing solo. The game doesn't scale down the difficulty if you choose to go it alone, so you are just punishing yourself.
