Once I unlocked the shield, I haven't used either dog even once.
As for the actual efficacy of the guard dogs, idk when I was farming flamethrower kills for a weapon certification reward I ran a liberty guard dog and it seemed to do fine (vs bugs). Just gotta mind its ammo.
Personally I dont run this since i'd rather have a personal shield (its too good rn to pass up if you play with randoms), autocannon backpack, ballistic shield with defender, or supply pack for whatever reason. The other backpack options are just kind of better in most cases other than running it with a flamethrower or maybe solo content.
If it could be resupplied via regular ammo pickups or have "infinite" reserve ammo, I'd totally run it.
I have only ever managed to get a laser guard dog to reload once, under effectively crazy fighting conditions. I have heard of other people managing to run out of spare heatsinks, one can only wonder what kind of situation that was.
