Yeah I just figured if they had already beaten garden knight without leveling, they had probably been beating their head against the wall for a while haha.
But also yes reading the manual is super important, I definitely recommend they pay a lot more attention to it moving forward if they want to not struggle with certain areas.
For instance there is a manual page that actually recommends exactly what, and to what numbers, you should level up before you fight the Garden Knight. There is also a page that shows you how to level up.
I loved this aspect of the game. No other game has done something like this. I see what the developer was doing here. It's from the days when you would import a game from Japan but you couldn't read any Japanese so you had to try to figure things out to play a game without knowing the language. It truly is done very well in this game. It gives you just enough to figure things out.
The manual is a huge part of this game. Every page is important and you will bring up the manual constantly as you play this game. For the obvious map aspect of the levels, but also with explaining how to actually play the game and where you should go next.
Maybe some people struggle with this, but it really "clicked" for me without being too difficult. Unfortunately there is so much hand holding today that for some people they may find this too difficult as their brain has atrophied and they are often coddled too much.
The sense of wonder and discovery in this game is truly brilliant.
This game is quite unique where it doesn't even bother telling you how to even play from the very beginning. Yes it is all down in an obtuse way, but it's not that obtuse. There is plenty there if you use your brain. I loved this aspect of the game.
You are in for a treat! Always use the manual.
Bottom line is that the manual pages are a HUGE part of this game and it helps out a lot. You will come back to it quite often as you play it. You don't even get the complete manual from the start. You have to find it piece by piece.
The fact that the very first page of the manual was actually available to you from the very beginning of the game, but you had no idea that this was the case at the time, is absolutely brilliant. No wonder this game took 7 years to make mostly by all by a single person. That required a lot of work and a lot of polish to do something like this.
Any other game (even Souls-like) would give you the level-up option by interacting with an item (such as a resting place) or speaking with an NPC.
