There's your answer. The fact that you haven't even use it properly in combat and think it's only for traversal goes to show why you don't understand this design decision.
Mind you, I'm not saying it can't be done differently, only that what's there is not only serviceable for the type of combat, but way more useful than people give credit for (including yourself). This is especially true when you're focusing on closing distance after dodging, strafing or baiting and hitting with the roll+sprint, and not just depending on iframes and the sprint afterwards to get faster from point A to B.
