I'll throw you this bone. Try to steal their bunt with a smash and parry it. Pay very close attention to their serve. Most players only have one or two serves and they do the same thing every burst. So just remember what they did last time, and punish it next time.
The upcoming ranked update should improve it, but you might have to wait longer.
This is the soul reason why I force lose at times in QM, so people won't quit the lobby and stay to have some more fun.
Months ago everyone just screwed around teabagged and whatnot to show they're having fun. Now it's just all serious players i'm getting.
I loved acting like a fool in QM passing my serve to others if I die first. But when serious players join and do nothing but wall spam before trying to hit you and keep them ball to themselves long as possible, that's just halla noying and makes people leave, i'm not looking to play serious in a freakin QM now i'm pretty much forced to....keep that nonsense in 1v1 nobody wants to see you wall spam after you die each time.
As for complaining about ball control, you don't get to dictate how others are and aren't allowed to play. It's on you to deal with that by getting more aggressive and forcing them to make a move before you just snatch their bunts - don't just sit back and let it happen.
I don't know if you've read through the thread I wrote about my ranked experience, but my first match online I was rank ~43,000; I was matched against someone ranked ~130. In my case, it wasn't that I was in queue for 10 minutes before the matchmaking algorithm said "Hey, this is the only other person online, sorry bro", my match was found within 1 minute of me starting queue.
Nobody expects matchmaking to find someone "exactly as skilled" as they are, the issue at hand is that lower ranked players (players with less skill/experience) are getting put against people in the top maybe 5% (I'm throwing out this number, since I don't know the playerbase) regularly. The way the game plays makes this sort of situation extra frustrating, because really good players can completely control the ball, leaving you feeling like you aren't even playing the game.
As mentioned above, there is an update coming (or maybe it happened I haven't been playing online due to the holidays), that should help this to an extent.
You also have to keep in mind that the top 5% are the players who spend a lot of time online, they're always there while less experienced players aren't playing nearly as often (those that do will soon gain that experience and move up).
10 minutes was an arbitrary number. That being said, I'd rather have a fun match that took 10 minutes to find, than one where I get completely decimated.
If you personally want an online matchmaking system where the top players regularly get put against new players (and crush them), then that's your perogative, however, that isn't enjoyable for most people, and thus won't grow the playerbase. As Yin said, that is such an obvious point that arguing against it is pointless.
