I know you implied that you're unwilling to mod your game, but maybe it's worth looking for performance-enhancing mods on mod.io? Getting started with modding is shockingly easy - DRG has mod.io integration, and you just subscribe to mods as if it's the Steam Workshop.

Shouldn't have any undesirable side effects:

I believe I've seen the ability to filter out modded games in the server browser, but I've been able to join games hosted by players who seem to have mods of some kind installed, like automated messages in chat. If I were to install a mod, would there be any reason to be afraid that I might inadvertently be scaring away potential joiners?

if you're only installing client-side mods like weapon heat crosshair nobody will even be able to know you have it at all, as long as your mods are verified then you won't deter players from your games
The two mods I have used since haven't caused any obvious issues.
