NVIDIA shadowplay instability with DRG
edit: this post was made before the season 5 update which seems to have made the recording software problem much worse. turning off HAGS no longer seems to be a permanent solution, as the instability may return at random times. hopefully someone from GSG sees this and provides more technical information

i've been having issues with nvidia shadowplay, particularly with the instant replay function, which i use to record in the background and capture the last minute's worth of gameplay. the overlay would flicker and stutter constantly, it would randomly turn itself off at times, and manual recording would never work
however, i recently discovered a solution to this problem. i wanted to share it here because i couldn't find a solution online without a lot of digging and troubleshooting, so hopefully this thread helps get the message out

you need to turn off hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. go to settings > system > display > graphics settings - the option to turn off HAGS will be there. i don't know why but it apparently messes with overlay software such as discord and shadowplay. which makes sense, my discord overlay would often crash or not work with DRG too. since turning HAGS off, i have been able to successfully record clips and recordings as usual. hopefully this can help anyone else who uses shadowplay

I don't currently use Shadowplay much, but this is good to know!

Oh yeah I remember I just turned off Shadowplay because it would just never consistently work. I'll try this out, thanks. Only problem is, I think framegen (which is being added in s5) won't work if it's turned off.

sadly, can't now, because I don't open it, but still can't use shadowplay to record

yeah unfortunately this no longer seems to be a permanent solution. since S5 recording software is even more unstable. i have since edited my OP to reflect this

Now I just use Steam's game recording. I think it's still in beta though. But it just works, which is all I want.

the Geforce Experience is great, only because it almost no impact the FPS

OBS + external harddisk gamers stay winning.

Anyways I hope this issue wouldn't be prevalent once Steam releases their own shadowplay-like software.

but this issue extends to OBS, it crashes less than 10 seconds into recording DRG

Then your issue is very likely your system then. I've been recording ♥♥♥♥ in DRG on OBS plenty of times with zero issues, even on my ancient setup before I got a new one.

no it isn't, OBS works fine in multiple other games i've tried. the issue is exclusive to DRG

Are you using GPU instead of CPU to encode the video while recording, by the way?

I would have agreed, until I found out that other recording programs can also make use of the dedicated NVENC chip, allowing them to have little to no impact on performance just the same as GeForce recording. Steam's recording for instance does indeed make use of NVENC so it's been an almost perfect replacement to GeForce for me. Only problem is the max quality is 24mbps, which is low considering I usually recorded at 50-75mbps. But it works :')

I doubt it's a system issue, because I had the same problem with DRG and I've done DDU and complete reinstallation of latest drivers and everything, even getting the beta Gerforce App with the new improved recording in AV1 codec... Still didn't work.

yes, i've also tried both game and window capture and it still crashes. i've also tried uploading crash logs to OBS' analyzer (which is where i got the idea to disable HAGS) and it still crashes. the only way to make OBS (and shadowplay) not crash is to run the game in windowed, which is obviously not ideal

Damn, well I'm not sure what's up with it then, or how to resolve it, though I am still pretty sure somewhere in the system is interfering with OBS and other recording softwares. Mint perhaps?
