Thunderhead shines in haz 4 and 5 missions where there are alot more targets.
So you've learned that weapons have distinct use cases. Kinda like saying a hyper propellant grenade launcher isn't good against swarmers, but is really good against dreadnoughts...
Thunderhead is better than his other weapons with neurotoxin OC. Its his most ammo efficient weapon and its leaps and bounds above the other two in that department while still putting out great AoE damage which is a vast majority of the game.
The minigun is pretty average at everything which isn't bad for a starter weapon, although it could do with 300 more ammo imo. And the RL is just bad since it has so low damage AND low ammo. (Although the minelet OC is funny to use.)
It has good OCs tho.
If you don't have OCs yet i recommend just playing minigun. Its the straight up best no OC primary in the game.
That issue isn't exclusive to auto-cannon unfortunately, almost entirety of gunner's arsenal is unimpressive, slow and feels bad to use, I'm sure there are plenty of people with higher tolerance towards bad weapons but the general issue remains for those that can't stomach all the downsides of playing gunner.
Be it the endless waiting for minigun to: spin up, get accurate, kill something with max base damage on par with that of scout's unmodified assault rifle, lack of weakpoint modifiers and blatant stat lies or Auto-cannon's terrible accuracy regardless of weapon mods, slow fire rate ramp up and awful reload time.
The missile launcher is your best bet here although the projectile babysitting is not to everyone's taste.
