You need to find solid ground to land on so you don't fall to your death. That, or ask your team's Engineer to put a platform where you want to grapple. That's the basic synergy between the two classes.
Alternately, you can use a power attack to try and create a ledge to stand on, but it requires practice and lag can mess you up.
Nitra protudes out of the wall and can be stood on most of the time.

Maybe i can learn your trick for using the grapple. It seems pretty easy. But i expect it will take many hours for me to learn. Good video, thanks!
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I only have Scout halfway leveled. Or maybe I'm just not playing him right. Or both.
Also it's dangerous but you can grapple to a spot, use hover boots, pickaxe a small hole, then look up and grapple into the hole you just made before you hit the ground... but if you don't do it right, you won't get a second chance and you pretty much need to fall.
Altho I would say that going all the way to the hook in the wall is appropriate when hopping on top of red sugar, since a slip there can be rather.. Counterproductive.
The reason I recommend the 30m is that most things will NOT be over 30m away - and this allows you a knee jerk reaction of aiming up and shooting your grapple which has saved me numerous times before.
The faster grapple is just like above, it will come in clutch. The 2.5 seconds actually allows you to grapple to a far ceiling and gives you just enough time to grapple once more before hitting the ground.
As stated, let go of the mouse and let yourself "swim" through the air. This provides you time for yoru grapple to recharge as well as for momentum to continue moving you, this gives you a natural curve of stopping and sometimes is just better for your brain to not be swinging around at top speeds.
Seriously, just get an engineer or driller to give you a hand. Scout is absolutely the second best class (Gunner is a necessity for 3-4 men Haz 5 runs, you need to be able to kill - a lot) in a 4 stack but alone you can run Haz 5's with Bosco with no issue if you time your grapples, pheromones and shots just right. Engi + Scout is a common two man wrecking squad that can pretty much handle any instance.
Hopefully place is not too far off the ground. That's your fault for pointing at it though.
1) There is sometimes a beer available that reduces fall damage taken.
2) Are there still perks that reduce fall damage taken?
3) You can point with the grappler downwards while falling to safely get to the ground.
4) I use the perk where I can hover in the air for some seconds. So if I'd fall to my death, I activate that, and once I start falling again I can use the grappler again to safely land. I also use that to sometimes hover in front of a wall or minerals, use a power attack to cut a hole into the wall, and the next time I get back up there I have a place to stand.
5) Make your shield as powerful as possible, as it absorbs fall damage.
Also, pheromone grenades saves games.
