How do you use the grappling gun effectively?
I just fall to the ground and die. Also can you mine while using the grappling gun?

before having the last upgrade that reduces fall damage after a hook, in addition to the armor upgrade that reduces fall damage, i wouldn't reccoment solo mining ore on walls (except nitra, you can pretty easily stand on it), if you play with an engineer, ping the ore vein and he'll probably put you a platform under it, otherwise, if you're solo, you can still try to mine a spot for you to stand on with power attack after a hook, but only do that if the fall damage doesn't damage your health too much
You can't mine while grappling on to something.

You need to find solid ground to land on so you don't fall to your death. That, or ask your team's Engineer to put a platform where you want to grapple. That's the basic synergy between the two classes.

Alternately, you can use a power attack to try and create a ledge to stand on, but it requires practice and lag can mess you up.

Nitra protudes out of the wall and can be stood on most of the time.

Watch gameplay videos. Here is one I recorded. This is how I use the grapple. Learn to time the power pickaxe attack right and you can grapple at any mineral, make a hole with the attack moments before you bump into it, then safely land inside. Also, hoverboots is a big big help for this. For me, the increased grapple reel in speed is absolutely essential for all I do.

Maybe i can learn your trick for using the grapple. It seems pretty easy. But i expect it will take many hours for me to learn. Good video, thanks!

You make Scout look like he's actually fun lol.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I only have Scout halfway leveled. Or maybe I'm just not playing him right. Or both.
Scout is immensely satisfying to use IMO. You feel like Tarzan or Batman when swinging around the place effortlessly, picking off big enemies left and right, helping the team maintain a good ammo supply etc. It's been my main since the very start, with the Engineer close behind. The grapple is really key though, it's what makes the class what it is and it's used for absolutely everything.
Don't let go of the mouse button until you stop moving. This will give you time to look down and make sure you're landing where you want (very useful for landing on red sugar crystal, etc).

Also it's dangerous but you can grapple to a spot, use hover boots, pickaxe a small hole, then look up and grapple into the hole you just made before you hit the ground... but if you don't do it right, you won't get a second chance and you pretty much need to fall.
I think letting go whenever you feel is appropriate, is the right way to go. I rarely feel like I need to grapple all the way to the point where the hook hits. I let go early 95% of the time and let momentum carry me exactly where I need to go. But it takes time to get a feel for this.

Altho I would say that going all the way to the hook in the wall is appropriate when hopping on top of red sugar, since a slip there can be rather.. Counterproductive.
Get lower cooldown but also the 30m grapple. Rather than the "faster dwarf" opt out for the "faster grapple" and it will become an invaluable tool that can save you from the most dire situations.

The reason I recommend the 30m is that most things will NOT be over 30m away - and this allows you a knee jerk reaction of aiming up and shooting your grapple which has saved me numerous times before.

The faster grapple is just like above, it will come in clutch. The 2.5 seconds actually allows you to grapple to a far ceiling and gives you just enough time to grapple once more before hitting the ground.

As stated, let go of the mouse and let yourself "swim" through the air. This provides you time for yoru grapple to recharge as well as for momentum to continue moving you, this gives you a natural curve of stopping and sometimes is just better for your brain to not be swinging around at top speeds.
Most importantly is to know where you're grappling. Nine times out of ten a Scout will attempt to grapple above a vein, power axe it to create their own hole and spam the Jump key in the off chance that the hole is small enough to register your hitbox there and allow you to stay afloat.

Seriously, just get an engineer or driller to give you a hand. Scout is absolutely the second best class (Gunner is a necessity for 3-4 men Haz 5 runs, you need to be able to kill - a lot) in a 4 stack but alone you can run Haz 5's with Bosco with no issue if you time your grapples, pheromones and shots just right. Engi + Scout is a common two man wrecking squad that can pretty much handle any instance.
Point at place. Click and hold. Ta Da! You are now at place.

Hopefully place is not too far off the ground. That's your fault for pointing at it though.
Advice:
1) There is sometimes a beer available that reduces fall damage taken.
2) Are there still perks that reduce fall damage taken?
3) You can point with the grappler downwards while falling to safely get to the ground.
4) I use the perk where I can hover in the air for some seconds. So if I'd fall to my death, I activate that, and once I start falling again I can use the grappler again to safely land. I also use that to sometimes hover in front of a wall or minerals, use a power attack to cut a hole into the wall, and the next time I get back up there I have a place to stand.
5) Make your shield as powerful as possible, as it absorbs fall damage.
A lot of the time you cancel it early and use the momentum to carry you to better places or use the apex of the zip to create a ledge with the pickaxe.
I'm gonna try some different grapple tier upgrades this evening, just to try out something new. Last time I did, the increased grapple fire speed didn't work out for me. It didn't have enough momentum for many of the maneuvers I employ in and outside of battle. Also, is the slower reel in speed enough to carry you past a Bulk or Ghost without getting hurt? When I kite a Ghost or Bulk, I zip past them over and over, their attack isn't fast enough to hit you on the way past it.

most fun class, i cant stand playing without flare gun and grapple.
Also, pheromone grenades saves games.
