How do you NOT run out of ammo in this game??
Out of all the FPS I ever played in my life, I don’t think any of them has been as hardcore with ammo management than this one.

Running out of ammo in this game is not some oddity but it is pretty damn common and I got it both solo and with randoms. What can be done about it aside from the obvious "try to save your ammo"? Is there a perk or something I am missing? Anything to make Melee viable so I don’t have to waste as much ammo? Hard to save ammo when it is the only viable option for combat...the enemies in this game don’t despawn nor retreat from what I have seen either so you can’t just keep running forever.

I am using the Gunner class rn, is it the worst for ammo management?

And yes I do try to focus on nitra; it sometimes just plain isn’t enough. Rarely it is actually excessive but 8 times out of 10, it is *very* stingy and only allows to resupply once or twice.

You must be very new I assume?

Pretty much every match ends with enough extra Nitra for 2-3 resupplies.

If anything, there is too much.

Pick ammo upgrades for your weapons and don't just spray wildly, shoot with a purpose. Learn to aim, and yes learn to conserve ammo. Pick area on your pickaxe so your power attack can kill a few grunts at once when they're grouped up.

No there's no perk for ammo.

Use your secondary and your grenades.

9 out of 10 times nitra isn't stingy at all.

Make your weapon loadouts for ammo efficiency over damage.
And shoot carefully, headshot/weakpoints above all and make efficient use of weapons. You should always have enough ammo inbetween nitra resupplies.

Yeah *I* am new, but even then, the randoms I played with also had ammo issues! Lots of times we lost because no one had ammo or little ammo.

Also 3 resupplies??? I would consider myself lucky if I can find that amount on a mission, let alone have 3 left overs by the end lol.

I will try to use the melee attack more I guess. Maybe you need to kite the enemies more in this game to kill them all in one big AoE spray thingy...

You need to explore more. Exploration is a key part of the gameplay. There's usually enough nitra for around 6 to 8 resupplies per mission, which is usually more than enough.

You're probably missing a lot of nitra, which is why you're struggling with ammo.
You're probably also not quite up there with time and combat efficiency.

Keep playing, you'll get around eventually.

Shooting enemies in their weakspots helps tremendously with reducing ammo consumption, in general.

With aoe weapons it's most optimal to shoot crowds, though. The more enemies grouped together, the better.
Driller primaries deal damage that "goes through" enemies, so to speak, so again, bigger the crowd, the less ammo you'll be spending.

Beware of Wardens, since they up the resistances of bugs affected by their pink beams. Try to prioritize Wardens among the rest.

The rest is practice, I say. It'll come as you play.

Don't be discouraged, you're just a Greenbeard playing with other Greenbeard rando's, ammo is more than plentiful once you get a bit experienced at the game.

Upgrading your guns will definitely help.

Sometimes you just get bad nitra RNG, other timses you are lazily leaving some chunks behind that could make the difference.

Spec into extra TOTAL capacity, not clip/magazine size.
Learn to aim for weakspots.
Use the pickaxe power attack more often.
Get better with grenades, use ones that actually kill or do damage.
Don't overdip on ammo supplies - they aren't going anywhere, leave them until you need them.

Most importantly, don't try to do the gunner's job and let the driller area sweep.
There is a ton of ammo lost in crossfire when one dwarf can easily sweep up a chunk of enemies by themself.

1300 hours here, its very rare I find myself without ammo and the times I do its just bad nitra RNG. You gotta learn to make due.

Guessing they were also new? And that you had an inexperienced scout who didn't collect nitra?

Also 3 resupplies??? I would consider myself lucky if I can find that amount on a mission, let alone have 3 left overs by the end lol.

Often even more than that. But even so you can complete most missions (at least haz 3-4) with just one resupply.

I mean, whenever your power attack is cooled you might as well. You don't need to kite to kill a bunch in AoE, but use your grenades when enemies do clump up.

If you haven't used half of everything by the time you resupply you're basically wasting ammo/grenades etc.

Ask your scout to illuminate the ceilings, you’ll find much, much more nitra. Eventually you’ll have a “feel” of where all nitra can spawn, and you’ll be able to spot it even in the dark (it can reflect light from very far away and catch your eye if you look closely)

Alternatively, make use of your laser pointer! “Scan” large rooms with it by moving it mid-speed up and down the walls. when you hit a mineral deposit with it, it will make a ping sound effect and a small ripple where you scanned it.

use the right tool for the job. dont face-tank and mag dump everything you see. let enemies group up and use area attacks. fade enemies into your team if your team is more effective against a certain enemy type. use the environmental dangers to kill enemies.

take extra ammo when offered on skills and overclocks. extra ammo is boring but when you can shoot more freely, the game is more fun.

practice, the more you know your weapons the better you'll preform with them
the better you preform with said weapons the less shots you'll miss/the less you'll spend killing targets, and therefor spending less ammo

if all else fails you can take ammo upgrades to make up for some weapons being less forgiving with missed shots like the smart rifle
Oh hi flariz! I remember seeing you on the l4d2 forums. Welcome to DRG!

Okay thanks for the tips I will try to apply them next time.

Ngl I do enjoy the difficulty but losing because of ammo most of the time is... a little underwhelming. I rather lose from getting legit overwhelmed by the enemy horde/outplayed by the game than just simply because I can’t defend myself.

Other than that I do enjoy the difficulty as it is with Hazarad 3 I think it is (The one that claims 75%). I dont dare to go Hazard 4 just yet because I already seen plenty of horrors just at level 3. Overall the game is fun.

But I’m all seriousness, I’ve found that counting how much ammo it takes to kill enemies really helps. Like three hurricane rockets into one grunt. And of course utilize your secondary often.
