What to do if mods cause issues
Attention, Miners!

Although we strive to deliver a flawless gaming experience in the depths of Hoxxes IV, we can’t guarantee you won’t encounter a crash or a compatibility issue at some point while playing with user-generated mods.

Currently, Deep Rock Galactic automatically detects if an installed mod causes a crash and disables them on subsequent launches of the game. However, we can't guarantee this safety precaution works all the time. Therefore, if you encounter any undesired oddity that ruins your game experience, we advise you to follow this guide to remove all modding-related content.

If you find yourself in a predicament where a mod has caused unwanted changes to your Save Game, you can always use the ‘Restore Save’ button in the Save Menu to revert your progress to a previous date. You can also separate your progress into two different Save Games if you wish.

⚠️ Warning: this guide removes all mods from your game. You will need to resubscribe to the mods you wish to keep.

How do I remove all mods?

  • Step 1
Open mod.io in a browser[drg.mod.io] and log in with your Steam account. Unsubscribe from all mods.

  • Step 1
Right-click Deep Rock Galactic in your Steam Library. Select "Properties...".

  • Step 2
Enter "-disablemodding" (without quotation marks) in the Launch Options field. This launch parameter disables all modding functionality and removes all mods you currently have installed when you launch the game.

  • Step 3
Launch the game and exit to desktop after loading into the Space Rig.

  • Step 4
Right-click Deep Rock Galactic in your Steam Library. Select "Properties...".

  • Step 5
Delete "-disablemodding" from the Launch Options field.

  • Step 6
Launch the game and see if your issue has been resolved. If you are still crashing, proceed to Step 7.

  • Step 7
Delete the mod.io folder from the following location: "C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Local". You can find this path easily by entering "%appdata%" in the Windows start menu and going one step back in the Roaming directory.

  • Step 8
Delete all .pak files, except FSD-WindowsNoEditor.pak, from the following location: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deep Rock Galactic\FSD\Content\Paks". You can find this path easily by right-clicking Deep Rock Galactic in the Steam Library, select Properties, Local Files and then pressing the 'Browse...' button. If it's already empty, you're good!

My Main Save Game has been converted to a Sandbox Save Game. How do I restore it to an non-Sandbox Save Game?

  • Step 1
Unsubscribe to all mods on mod.io. and delete all .pak files except for the 'FSD-WindowsNoEditor.pak' in this location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deep Rock Galactic\FSD\Content\Paks

  • Step 2
Make a backup of your SaveGames folder in this location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deep Rock Galactic\FSD\Saved\SaveGames by e.g. copying the entire content to a separate folder.

  • Step 3
    Launch the game.

  • Step 3
Open the ESC menu and navigate to the Save Menu tab in the Options menu.

  • Step 3
Type a save name in the text field and press Save Current

  • Step 4
Once the Space Rig has reloaded, enter the Save Menu tab again and load back into your sandboxed Main Save

  • Step 5
Enter the Save Menu tab again and press Reset Progress

  • Step 6
Finally, enter the Save Menu tab again and press Restore Save. Select a Save Slot that matches the progress of your sandboxed Main Save without the (Modded) tag.

is your passion to link 3rd party apps to the game, i see that regarding modding as a mistake, the website just need to shut down or be bought out and introduce some premium services in consequence, and the whole thing then makes a problem again, privacy is also a problem that i should log in with my steam data, how does that work will my data be stored there? no information on this.
i realize that you do this because of the xbox players, you are welcome to continue to do so, however, the steamworkshop would be important as an alternative option.

Said 3rd party apps are now integrated to work with the game, hence the links. As for Steam Workshop, it is nowhere near as flexible as mod.io. See their explanation on why they chose mod.io here at DRG news section.

My friend got [sandbox] on his main save. What should he do to turn back it to normal?

In option there is a save management where you can load the original save.

Maybe you shouldn't have chosen garbage Mod.io as the platform for delivering mods.....

I started my game up and my save was forced into Sandbox mod. I do not have and never have had mods installed. I even went and looked in the folders where people said older mods would be installed (FSD/Content/Paks). Nothing. Tried to duplicate my save file to a non-sandboxed version. Nothing, the option to load a non-sandboxed version was greyed out. Now my game doesn't even start it, I just get an error that says "Failed to open descriptor file ../../../FSD/FSD.uproject"

So basically my copy of the game is pooched and is my hundreds of hours sunk into my save and all the unlocks and what not I had are completely gone, along with all the temporarily available content like the anniversary/holiday/steam vote helmets. I'm not signing up for some 3rd party data collection app just to be able to click the "Mods Off" option that the game should be switched on by default. Now I have to re-install the game (not even sure if that will resolve the issue), start all over from scratch, figure out a hex editor to unlock the seasonal helmets I had, etc etc etc.

All this nonsense because a small minority of the player base wanted to be able to shove some stupid memes sounds and skins into their lobbies. What an absolute disappointment.

Dont do anything stupid, the devs can help you, usually you give them your savefile and they can repair it.

Hey, man. Sorry to hear you're having issues - Save Game files can be tricky sometimes, but we have several safety precautions in-game that safeguards your progression. With that being said, corrupting a Save Game can happen anytime and from anything, so fear not. It's not necessarily modding's fault. Anyway, I'll try my best to help you out!

First, backup your Save Game files in the SaveGames folder of the game's directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deep Rock Galactic\FSD\Saved\SaveGames). Then remove them from the SaveGames folder and launch the game. If your Save Game files are corrupted, that should at least enable you to launch the game. Once you're in-game, open the ESC menu and navigate to the Saves tab. Press the 'Restore Save' button and see if you can restore your lost progression from the overlay that opens up.

If this doesn't work, reach out to me on our Discord server, and I'll see what I can do from there. Good luck!

Same problem here. Played 347hrs and all progression gone now :(
Creepy Necro Sep 15, 2021 @ 9:31am
For some reason, mods propagate to all the saves. Created a new save just in case anything goes wrong and loaded few mods (Verified and Approved only) there, and suddenly they've appeared on the main save (both Verified and Approved). Is it really supposed to be so?

I'm fine with them on the main save, actually :) But it just seems kinda weird.
Pickleorama Sep 15, 2021 @ 4:43pm
Whenever I play a game with approved mods only, and leave the game, it always prompts me with a huge screen and like 10-15 different savefiles and timestamps, all of which are labeled sandbox. How can I avoid this, because this makes me lose progress every time I swap back to my main save. Is there any reason that the game might be misinterpreting ANY mods installed as sandbox mods after leaving a game?

update: I clicked one and it created a new level1 savegame, and when I changed back to my main save, every mod I have was suddenly enabled again. (the last mission I was on had only 1 mod installed)

update 2: after disabling every mod and trying to join a nonmodded lobby, it still makes me click "disable mods"
I believe there are some issues with mods automatically enabling

update 3: Can confirm, mods re-enable even after both normal AND modded games. maybe a "disable all" button would be nice. It keeps moving xp to the wrong saves and causing other minor issues like that.
