Its an exercise protocol that forces a dwarf to either test their patience or physically exert themselves to run over to Molly so they can deposit their ore and minerals. One of the management shenanigans that I'm not too fond of myself personally.

"You don't get enough exercise"

Yeah f***ing right...

it somewhat follows the team.

this is useful in case you all run down a cave without pressing C.

otherwise you'd have to survive 20 waves before molly finally arrives.

It tries to stay near the team.

I think it even prioritizes players who have minerals on them as well.

he right, sometime you call mule go to A position he go to D position lol
Sure he follow the team is ok, or follow single dwarf location that nearby.

but sometime molly still walk like 5-10m away from the Beacon (calling) position, or come, then stop and keep walking without any dwarfs calling it for sure, saw it ^^

I hope we will able to customize molly as well :P

Molly uses a similar pathing system to the glyphids, except that it will only move if it is called, or is a certain distance away from all Dwarves. This is primarily to not punish players for forgetting to micromanage Molly all the time, so that she'll never be more than a few seconds away.
There is no way to prevent Molly from occasionally moving by herself, aside from constantly placing beacons or always staying close to her.
(Edit) If Molly's beacon location is obstructed, she'll generally walk a short distance away before trying to sit down.
Lastly, when Molly is called to the drop pod she will take the shortest(ish) possible path to the drop pod. This can be frustrating or confusing at times, and it will, very rarely, get a bit buggy. If Molly cannot find a path that will get her to the drop pod in the allotted time, she can dig a very small tunnel to walk through to expedite her trip.
Hope that helps to definitively explain her behavior!

It follows the host, so if the host walks away molly will try to follow

Moves when you're far enough away so you don't always have to manually call her.
Which can be annoying in some circumstances where you want the mule to be in a specific location but you have to move around.
