The devs need to fix the way progress is saved and they need to do it now, no matter what the excuse for this method of saving is. If they are capable of releasing a multiplayer game on Steam and asking for money, they are capable of ensuring that progression isn't tied to local files and persists through upgrades, glitches and re-installs. This is unprofessional.
You need to address this issue sooner rather than later. Your game will not grow if you refuse to secure progression through reinstalls, microtransactions, and potentially even updates (Since you do not secure progression online, you cannot know that one of your own updates will not delete everyone's account progress.)
Players are not responsible for this. Do something about it.
How few players will go out of their way to read this? Nobody is expected in 2018 to assume their progression in an online co-op game is their personal responsibity to backup. Why do they have our money if we have to do their job? They are responsible for fixing this.
Steam Cloud only uploads the game when steam is running, do not close steam before the service is done after closing the game.
