Only if you're one of the ones that pays full price for games. I always wait for sales and Alyx often gets reduced to 20 dollars on Steam sales.

They gave it to anyone that bought Steam hardware in the past. If you bought a Steam controller or that streaming box they used to sell then that's why you got a copy.

There must have been something else since I've never bought and don't own any Steam hardware.

I bought it when it was on sale. It was also hard for me to spend 60$ for Half life.
But I have finished it 3-4 times and I can say it is by far the best (not includind Flight Sim games) VR title on the market!
