iirc he said we shouldn't necessarily consider a low player count a sign the game was a failure from Valve's perspective.
Instead, I think he mentioned that they would look at how game reviewers liked the game and some other things like that.
I think it's safe to say that by all accounts, financially speaking, HL:A was FAR from a flop.

Click "Daily Peak Sums" at the bottom and look at the March 23rd data. The player count was between 3 and 5 times higher than ever before in VR history due to HLA alone. The game was a massive success.

94% critic rating, 98% "overwhelming positive" on the steam review page. I think the last estimate showed units sold/owned were well over 500,000k, which is absolutely impressive for a VR title. Not to mention, this is a title that will continue to sell the more people adopt VR. Just about anyone that decides top hop on the VR bandwagon over the next few years is likely to pick up HL: Alyx. I think this will continue to do well over a long period of time.
