If it's the former, you also need to know that Ambush only works against the very first attack each turn. If that happens to be a non-lethal attack of an arty or bomber (where your infantry can't hit back), the ambush part is already used up. Which means if a Katjusha damages the 51. first and a small unit does a follow-up attack, ambush won't save it because it already triggered when Katjusha attacked it. I mean, the opponent will usually try to circumvent ambush. Ambush will only ever trigger if a) the opponent sacrifices one unit to trigger it and then follow up with a second unit to kill it or b) if he screws up and misses the ambush (or doesn't know what it does). So, IF he knows what ambush does he won't run into it unless he has enough units to spare or uses the "trick" with the arty/bomber
