What does KYD stand for?
And also are the weapon ranges historically accurate where possible?

Yes, and nearly crashed into it due to trying and failing to program the flight computers to calculate yards, feet and inches!

I think from my oppinion (as an American who is simi-good with both) that it would probably cost the US and the UK A large amount of money each. Ironicly, if you consider the amount of cars and street signs (and other imperial mesured stuff (Such as airplane altimiters)) in the US and UK being produced, it would appear that we are digging ourselfs deeper into this hole of cost of converting. That is just my personal oppinion though.

Any way you slice it the game engine is going to have to get bilingual before introducing any playable units other than USN and RN.

Heh heh another reason why RN should be the first DLC. :-D

Conn, sonar. Loud explosion on the bearing of the metric weenies!

Actually I work with both in a daily basis, so I'm pretty good at going between them, but for daily life since the US uses the imperial system that's what I'm most used to. When Carter pushed to switch in the 70s (I think, it predates me) there was some conversion done that still exists today. There's a small strip of highway near Tucson that's in km and km/h and it bothers the hell out of me.

In the naval world they tend to stick with the old imperial measurements, so they use nautical miles, yards, feet for depth and so on. I always set games to use metric if there's an option, but for naval games it just goes with the territory. Unless it's German submarines, they used metric I guess (?) so the imperial system wouldn't make sense. Although I would believe they used nautical miles, it's pretty universal for ships.

Since 1 yard is about 0.9 meters it's pretty similar, but for longer distances that little discrepancy does make an impact.
25000 yards = 22,86km.

Interestingly it's a mix.

For depth meters are used.
But for lenghts in the 2D environment, the imperial system is used, so sea miles and knots.

You went to the moon because of European scientists who used metric system.

Also, every time I see KYD, I can't help but think of a Jamaican phrase "Back a yard". It's hard to focus on the submarine warfare when you have a reggae song stuck in your head.

Ah, mon, when's the Jamaican Navy SSN DLC pack coming?

Not sure why they are not using knots as a speed indicator ?
Azrael Jun 28, 2017 @ 1:10am
Knots are used as speed indicator in the game.
Or what do you mean?

This game? Maybe there's a check box to change it but my stuff is knots.
I remember the 70s push for metric system. Had to learn both and metric is much easier, to me, but humans resist change even if it's better.

There is a
nonmetricunits=TRUE
line in the option.txt.

Never tried to turn it off: too scared at the prospect of exploding going for a 1000m depth by mistake :GlorkScared:

Hopefully, it is a hint of the coming of Soviet platforms.

Metric fans... a little tidbit:
Depths are in feet, speed is in knots and distance is in yards...

but ships appear to be measured in meters.
So metric is in the game, somehow.

Sorry if you are used to that wierd French measurement crap.
'Murica :-P
the irony being that this still uses sensible units with the kilo but sprinkles american regardation on top with the yard lol

dude, i don't want to burst your bubble but....
the reason why you guys flew to the moon is due to the fact that
you took a german nazi to america.
namely the guy who built the v 2 rockets.

and as a scientist he of course calculated and planned everything in the metric system.
this is sufficiently documented. you made films about it....

did you not pay attention in school or are you just being taught nonsense?

i am pretty shur youtube is full of videos about that topic. you may wanna watch some^^...

have a nice day. :lunar2019laughingpig:
