ToCS HD Texture Pack v6.12 (7/08/2023)
Description
This is a texture pack for The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel that targets the UI, battle effects, and eye textures to bring it more in line with a modern PC game.

Notice
There is now two versions of this texture pack: SenPatcher mod format (P3A) and the standard "overwrite files" version that replaces game files.
Steam users should use the new P3A version over the standard version to prevent their files from being overwritten periodically by Steam.
There is two sub-versions of the P3A version, the difference being the compression used: LZ4 or ZSTD. Differences between these are explained below.
LZ4: Compression is not as good as ZSTD, but should peform better than LZ4. Use with mechanical drives. If unsure, use this version.
ZSTD: Better compression than LZ4 but performs slightly worse. Use with solid state drives. If unsure, use the LZ4 version.
The HD "Thor" master quartz texture is broken by default in the "Standard" version. See Prerequisites to fix this.

Prerequisites
THE "P3A" MOD VERSION MUST BE USED WITH A CLEAN/UNMODIFIED INSTALLATION OF THE GAME! COMPLETELY REINSTALL IF YOU HAVE TO!
The game must be updated to v1.6 or textures will not scale correctly.
To fix Thor master quartz with the standard version, install any mods with SenPatcher or use the included patcher I created (either or both works).

How to Install:
P3A Mod Version
Copy the "mods" folder to the game's root directory.
Steam version is usually at: ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Trails of Cold Steel
Download latest SenPatcher from:
https://github.com/AdmiralCurtiss/SenPatcher/releases
Use the "Patch Game" button to select the launcher (Sen1Launcher.exe).
Choose any patches. Adjust font spacing for HD Cuprum should be checked.
Press the "Patch!" button. This creates "DINPUT8.dll" in your game folder.
And that's it. The "DINPUT8.dll" file is for patching and loading textures.
Play the game!

Standard Version
Copy "ThorPatch.exe" and "data" folder into your Cold Steel installation folder.
Overwrite any and all files.
Run "ThorPatch.exe" to patch "ed8.exe" with the fix.
Play the game!

Latest Changes:
v6.12 Fix random noise surrounding some quartz icons. Replace orbment cover icon with a higher quality icon. v6.10 Add back HD version of Thor master quartz. Requires patcher by AdmiralCurtiss or the texture will be broken! This can be downloaded at this link: https://github.com/AdmiralCurtiss/SenPatcher/releases v6.00 Updated maps used in Trista (academy and town maps). New redraw of the side bar used for the battle turn order. Replace HD font with one that better matches the original.

Final Notice:
As of v6.00, I am finally considering this texture pack "done". If anyone finds any issues from this point on, I will gladly try to fix them, but it is very doubtful that I will create any more textures. At this point the entire UI and all battle effects are finished.

I'm not trying to eliminate the need for Special K out of spite or necessity, if people still want to use it then that is up to them. For a project this large, having the ability to replace the images directly in the game just makes everything easier and ensures the longevity of the pack itself. Windows 7 users should finally be able to use it without having to downgrade to v1.4, even if using Windows 7 doesn't make much sense these days.

The tools to create phyre/pkg files are available publicly.

Sewer56 updated his PKG tools here, and implemented compression at my request:

The PKG tool can be plugged right into my tool to easily convert to the falcom formats. Everything has been done through reverse engineering: Sewer56 figured out PKG files, I figured out phyre images, and created tools to automate generating them.

Edit: I do plan on putting out far more documentation on all of it, I just haven't had the time to quite yet. Getting everything set up can be quite the pain, so I'll eventually write some kind of tutorial on working with PKG files and converting images. Also would like to make a breakdown of the headers in phyre images. I know final fantasy X remaster also uses the phyre engine, so it might be possible to modify those as well.
My question was about why the procedure involves sending textures to you to have them bundled, nothing to do with eliminating my software. I mentioned mine merely because I had assumed it was completely obsolete, I was just happy to see it could still prove useful in some cases.

The black suit requires hacks to unlock, there is no "legal" way to obtain it so I can't share the specifics. Anyway, I didn't realize there was this many textures. I could convert them, but I'd have to know where they all go within the game's files. There is no point in just converting some of them and not all of them, and I've never extracted environments (as there are 1000s of them). So I suggest keeping a hold of Special K for now for these specific textures.
why is it a hack? was it something that never came out? and ah ok. i don't really need them. but they are nice. i rather not use special k anymore. since i use reshade to give cs more color. it looks kinda washed out to me. and special k was crashing with reshade for me.

Oh sorry, well nobody has to send them to me, I just figured it would be a lot easier for me to do it since there is nobody else with knowledge on how to do it. So I was just trying to be nice rather than having them try to figure it out. But I finally did get some time to do a write-up for other modders.

If you look hard enough I'm sure you can find it. Anyway, once I finally get some free time I'll take another look. The issue right now is, I don't have a complete extraction of the game as it takes several GB to decompress all PKG files and convert them to PNG. And that is about the only way to figure out where these textures would go...

Why not use the version specifically written for Special K? It has better compatibility than official ReShade does and can do post-processing before the HUD is drawn. Should be the best of both worlds.

That's using the official ReShade version I assumed? You still haven't clarified.

Thread's old and dead, and I saw in your readme something regarding Special K no longer being used. Not sure if I want to throw those in if they're going to break the game. Or if they're redundant, perhaps..

Yo, I’m actually still using both those HD textures and bighead’s new one. You just still need to leave SpecialK for injecting those other additional HD textures. But all Bighead’s ones you can overwrite the PKG files. :)

Just to add to Hopyoprop's answer, this mod does not in anyway conflict with SpecialK. My textures just replace the game's stock textures directly. If someone was to use SpecialK to dump textures after installing this mod, they would actually be dumping my textures. :P They could even be replaced in this way.

I may eventually convert Dro's textures and even include them in my pack eventually, I very much doubt he'll mind (he's a pretty cool guy who also contributed textures to my Xenoblade pack a few years ago), although I would like to ask him first just to make sure.

This may be a crash related to this pack -

In the final chapter
In the cutscene where Osborne is shot, after the FMV and the knightmares (I know...) are dropped and wheel off screen, right before the tanks fire on them there is a consistent crash. I could not get around this crash without verifying game files and reverting to stock. I have a save file of this incident.

Also (but not sure if this is related, but cannot find enough evidence that this is a common issue) I was getting crashes in the final boss battle on the 7th floor old schoolhouse in chapter 6 if the battle went on too long. I did not get a chance to verify if it was texture pack related though. I do not have a save for this.

Happens again in a later cutscene Scarlet in a cockpit transitioning to her first-person zooming view I have a save for this as well

I am experiencing the exact same crashes. I did test if it was due to any graphic setting or because I am still using SpecialK for other mods, but these crashes only happen when this modpack is used.

Thanks for reporting this, I'll check to see if I can reproduce it. Uploading the save files may help speed things up for me.

Both saves[1drv.ms]. As mentioned before, there is no save for the boss fight.
