The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Sky SC still has the best ending and best 'villain' in the trails series...
Maybe it's nostalgia, all the sequels just do not deliver the same kind of satisfying ending, it's always cliffhanger with tons of unfinished plots.

I have just finished the Crossbell games, I actually liked Trails of Zero's (the 1st game) ending better than Azure (2nd game). Azure ends with a big cliffhanger and it feels like a preparation for the Cold Steel 3, and the villains in Zero is better than Azure IMO.

Maybe I sounds like a Leonhardt fanboy, but all the 'villains'/enemies in the following sequels just don't have the same amount emotinal impact, and their motives are not explained very well. Take Azure for example, there are like 10 of those big bad guys, but overall none of them are very memorable, (it's more or less introduction to new enemy characters for future series). I think the problem could be that there are too many side characters now, and they don't have enough focus on one or two of them to make their story memorable.

Yeah I have to agree that there's too much going on in the later games. HAven't play crossbell yet, but the amount of sideplots and chaarcters going on Cold Steel is pretty overwhelming. I mean I like that aspect also, the detailed world building is what I like so much. But it each character needs time to develop, otherwise it will all feel like it is going to waste. Having tons of characters means less time for each of them to have their inidividual arcs reach a satsifying and thoughtful conclusion.
Havent played Crossbel yet, but I prefer Cold Steel Over Sky so far. Unfinished plot threads doesnt make for a bad ending~

It's not unfinished plot threads, but the lack of the feeling of conclusion. In that regard, Azure has a pretty bad ending, but Zero has a good one IMO. It especially sucks that the Crossbell story has to continue in the Cold Steel Arc which focus on another group of main characters.

I think the number of characters and complex plots and lores are getting to the point that it's way too much for newcomers. I think trails series are best played when they concludes the whole series so that you don't have to wait between each game, much like binge watching anime. Unless you are a diehard fan play each game multiple times, you probably have hard time remember every characters and events when they add a new entry to the series 2 years later.
I'm not sure any of the games have a really impressive villain, but SC's big bad is certainly the most memorable if only for how much that big reveal in SC managed to recontextualize virtually every scene in the game.

There are only a few truly evil villain in the series, SC has got one, Zero has got one, FC and Azure has got none lol (as far as I know)

I want another game that has rixia mao in the main party
Nope. I hate Joshua.
I think its not really fair to compare sky SC with Ao and CS2.
The event from Sky SC give a conclusion the whole Estelle and Joshua journey with a lots of things gets wrapped up, with 3rd making a bridge to connect towards the Crossbell arc.
While the end of Ao and Cs2 is hardly enough to justify it as a conclusion, there's still a lot of stuff to cover and mysteries to solved. So at the very least, it'd be fair to wait untill CS3 got released (or translated for us west folks) before beginning to compare them with each respective title numbers.
I do agree that Sky SC give the best ending though.

When I played through Azure, it was good until the last chapter when I felt they really rushed the ending so they do not spoil too much for CS3. A lot of important characters did not get enough spotlight, especially the 'bad guys'. I really like the idea to play as an ex-cop joining resistance movement against the empire, but I guess that won't happen, we will just see it happen from another person's perspective...

Zero honestly has a better ending than Azure, even though a lot of mystery left unsolved. The big bad guy in Zero felt pretty menacing and really evil, and the story ends pretty well.
