The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

Where does Laura put her sword outside combat?
Laura's sword placement confuses me. Her animation suggests she puts it on her left side.

To compare with the other Class 7 members:

------

Rean and Jusis use scabbards on their left. Their swords are lightweight, so no problem here.

Elliot, Gaius, Alisa, and Emma put their staffs/spear/bow on their back - horizontally. Presumably they push on the handlebar and hold their head forward to get through doors - I'm suprised Gaius hasn't accidentally stabbed himself in the throat.

Fie and Crow use gun holsters.

Machias straps his gun on his back.

Millium doesn't hold a weapon.

-----

Laura puts her sword at her side like she has a really big scabbard, but this doesn't make much sense. For starters, Victor doesn't even have one (he uses a case). Also, the sword is so big that putting it at her side would scrape the ground or cause massive wear and tear on the attachment of the scabbard to her waist. There's also no way she would be able to walk or run properly with her sword like she does due to balance problems.

The sword is also roughly as tall as she is - putting it on her back at an angle would reduce some of the problems, but the thing would stand a good chance of flopping around, making movement difficult and possibly hit other people.

Also, wherever she puts it, she would also need to mvoe the sword to and from her side for her begin/end combat animations.

I assume the one source that could answer this question is the Sen no Kiseki live-action musical. But my Japanese is mostly nonexistent, so it's quite difficult for me to try to search for any relevant pictures or videos of Laura in it.

Apart of this promotional picture posted on Endless History, which suggests that Laura is simply carrying the sword in her hand...?

I'm pretty sure that this will hurt your hand if you do this...

I think she's supposed to have a holster for the blade hanging from her hip, and it just isn't drawn. Yes, a greatsword being drawn from the hip is really strange but that seems to be the intent, anyway.

Could be the sword is really dull and she uses it like a club.
We see that Agate has difficulty holding his blade, even with his muscles, whereas Laura deftly wields her as if it was just a regular hand-and-a-half sword. I theorize that Laura's sword actually has very little mass than what is apparent - it has the same mass has a regular hand-and-a-half or less - and in it's stowed away state, is a regular sized sword. There is a handle on the button the extends the length of the blade and enlarges it's width. This is mainly to give the sword more leverage at the end. Even a lever with a small amount of mass and yet long enough will exert far more force on a monster and be far more wieldy than a heavy blade you can barely lift. Given the physiology of the monsters Class VII regularly faces off, this could be ideal.

Alternatively, Laura's sword is made up of an ultra-strong, ultra-light material that can make an object as large as her greatsword have the same amount of mass as a hand-and-a-half sword.

She hides her sword in Hammerspace, the same place everyone stows their tear balms and stamina steaks.

You have no idea of the things I've seen girls put in their bras...

I think it literally has to be hammerspace. No one could see she had it until she pulled it out during her formal introduction.

Lol.

She keeps it in the same hammerspace that Tita uses to store her Agate-sized gattling gun along with its ammunition.

Jokes aside and I do find them funny guys gave me a good laugh, I can only logically asume she would have it strapped to her back, even if the animation doesn't show that, as that seems to be the only place that you could really put a broad sword that big on the body.

tbh I really wish they didn't have weapons disappear when they were put away I would like to see them on the character, could also make for fun NPC interaction having ppl asking the party why the hell that young woman is walking around with a sword that weighs probably as much as she does all the time.

That's a good point. It has to be somewhere where it can't be seen or that part of the narrative falls apart.

Weird.

You guys are trying way too hard to try to explain away what's pretty much a quick and dirty animation that Falcom did that cannot possibly be intended to be taken at face value.

True, but it's fun to overanalyze things sometimes. :P

Face value's easiest explanation is that Laura specializes in mass manipulation arts.
