Why cant I get the map to display?

Im using an xbox controller. Ive tried hitting the menu button on it and it just pauses the game and then brings up a menu. I dont see a map anywhere. I also tried pressing the M button on the keyboard and nothing happens. The web says those are the two ways to get to map.
Do I have to progress farther into the game to get a map? Im at the point now where Im trying to find the 1st meteor.

I'm pretty sure there is no in-game map

There is no in-game map but you can find player-made maps online.

To find meteorites look for a column of black smoke. The smoke is easiest to find during the day from a treetop.
