Personally I found that visiting all the Landmarks on the map was finished enough for me.
I'm not gonna camp at one Settlement and do nothing but make babies, advance generations and evolve for two hours straight just to get to 2m years ago. Why? So I can walk a little further on two legs? That's not my idea of fun and IMHO it's why this game is not more popular.
Make your own goals, make your own fun. When it's not fun anymore, stop playing.
