Getting rid of grannies bones
the bones of the previous generations are starting to build up around my camp. is there a way to get rid of them? will they despawn eventually?

They'll never disappear.

If you've already banked all the XP from them, a settlement that's loaded up with bone piles is as good a reason to move on to another settlement as any other.

(If you've done multiple gen leaps at one location, you've probably been sitting in one place for too long anyway. The map is huge. Keep moving.)

transporting all my tools and setting up new settlements is a big task. seems strange that i am supposed to move this often

Stay at a settlement location for as long as you want, but science provides the framework for the game. The trade-off is you have to keep the clan moving if you want to keep up with the science.

The map mimics the earth during this period - it gets drier and drier as you go. There are 7 biomes and 7 evolutionary stages. Each biome reflects what that evolutionary stage had to adapt to as the jungles started drying up.

Moving the clan is (and should be), the hardest part of the game.

They don't disappear until you make an evolution jump. I've found that, ideally, you should jump every two generations.

Once you get the neurons necessary for the clan to defend themselves, it's also best to just start taking the entire clan with you on expeditions. The resources to make new tools are everywhere, and I mean everywhere, so try to let go of the idea that you need to hoard and hold onto them. Just load up your main ape with a basalt chopper and a sharpened stick, and the rest of your apes with sharpened sticks in their left hand. That last part is important, because AI apes are able to eat, drink, and sleep as long as their right hand is empty (unlike the player, who needs both hands empty), and they will do so anytime you do.

Evo leaps move the clan to a new settlement location so it stops being a concern if you're moved anyway.

^that's...one way to do it. I prefer to take two males carrying two babies each - smaller footprint, same results.
