I am so lost on how to play

Can anyone help me figure it out? I just started out, how do you follow your senses? I'm at the beginning where I have to find the baby and comfort it and I am having a hard time understanding how to comfort the baby...it looks like such a fun game. Such a bummer they make it so difficult and don't give much of a tutorial.

If you're using a controller I can't really help, but on keyboard E brings up intelligence and you use it to swap between that, smell and hearing. Unknown smells show up as white clouds, sounds as white rings and sights as white squares; you have to hold I think the right side of the mouse long enough for it to register what it is. You can also just use your own hearing - right click the mouse once and your ape will call; you'll hear the baby ape respond if you're close enough.

The lack of tutorial and difficulty is deliberate; figuring everything out yourself is half the point of the game.

Take the time to actually read the information presented in tutorial pop-ups and on-screen button prompts. If you miss a tutorial pop-up screen you can review it (and learn much more) on the extensive Help screens (from the pause menu).

I've played through 4 times and watched dozens of beginners on Twitch - you can tell the people who will make it from those who won't within the first 5 minutes.

The ones who read everything (regardless of whether they actually understand it or not) are the ones who will succeed.

As far as comforting the baby goes - good parents listen to their children...like it says on the tutorial pop-up that appears when you approach the Hiding Spot for the first time.
