So should I restart?
Okay. So I started out great, really fleshed out the skills on one ape. Didn't realoze that pregnancy would be announced and just assumed my clan would breed on its own.
So I jumped forward a generation and ended up controlling an elder, who was infertil, this I did not know.
I also missed the option to switch between apes.
So I chose to evolve, granted I had developed quite a few neurons with that ape.
In the next era I can't find any outsiders and am limited to 4 reinforcements due to having two fertile females. This was cut down to 3 because a sabre toothed tiger or something similar ate one of the babies before I killed it with multiple sticks.
I've conquered fear in two areas yet searching everywhere I cant find any outsiders and as such I'll end up inbreeding a whole lot.

Should I just start again from scratch and learn from my mistakes or can I rescue my clan at this point?

Also, what's with the two child limit? I like everything else but I would prefer a chance of a parent dying in childbirth or there being stillborn apes.

But every evolutionary branch has the occasional dead end.

As a beginner, why not call this branch dead and start a new sprout.

If you're getting frustrated tho, I have a series of video tutorials and an in-progress walkthrough on my YT channel right now - channel name is the same as my Steam name, or you can find them by looking around here in the Discussions.

Find me a single player who hasn't had to do ^this after starting out and I'll give you a boiled ham.

So I guess I had better restart then? I mean my playthrough feels pretty doomed right now, had I bothered to learn how childbirth worked before evolving I would probably be doing better.
Oh well. There's plenty in the starting area that I never found and I never even conquered fear in it, I didn't know how to do that either.
Thanks!

Yeah I'll make a fresh start.
I'm not getting frustrated at all. The game is supposed to not hold your hand or help you out much, though I appreciate the many player made tutorials greatly.
I'll probably go into my save file directory just before every evolution or every 5 generations (whichever is first) and back things up so I don't have to go way, way back if I screw up badly, a (limited) save feature would probably get rid of all the negativity thrown at this game as I can see people getting very angry at losing days worth of time invested, which is probably quite annoying. A limited save feature (at the end of each era only) could even be written into the game's "story" by your hominids making a (very crude to more complex as eras go on) cave painting and this could be a "return point" for people playing on easy difficulties.
But I'm derailing my own thread talking about this.

Thanks for all the help and I'll be sure to check out your walkthrough tutorials.

Edit: Yup I restarted and feel much better for having done so. I have a number of kids (3 I think) two pregnant females and am recruiting new hominids to my clan as I (slowly and deliberately) explore.

I actually played through with my original clan, although I did start a second new clan at one point. When the second clan died out I realized my first clan wasn't in such bad shape after all and returned to that one. From there it was easy sailing.

There's no outsider's even in the first starter area? I remember there being a few.
