You don't have to return to your base if you don't want.
You can sleep everywhere (I recommend some high place like a tree so you'll be safe from predators). Also you can build that thing (I don't know its name 'cause I'm not english) to evolve your monke.
you don't have to go back to the base? Does your family feed on their own?
I don't know how it works, but I never cared if they ate or drink water and they never died because of that.
I did a test. I order all to follow me and go to the dessert zone. I was starving and dehydrated. I checked how where the others and they were fine.
So don't worry, you can be out a long time.
To offset this, the individual monkey you manually control is the only creature in the whole game that needs to eat, drink, or sleep. Your tribe will imitate you if you're nearby, but they have no basic survival needs. You only need to tend to your own survival needs, or fix a monkey friend if they're bleeding. They will happily sit around doing nothing whilst bleeding, and eventually die of it. I found after a while I'd just come back to base every 3-10 in-game days or so, just to touch butts and make babies.
