Have you guys found a way to actually attack?

The only way I managed to hunt something is to trick them into attacking me while I have a spear in my hands so that I can counterattack.

Also, what can I do with Basalt grindstone?

I don't think actively attacking with the spear is possible. Only by counterattack I guess, but not even that works with me

You have to:
move towards the attacker (with your movement buttons or the analog)
keep A (or whatever it is on keyboard) pressed
Release A when you hear a little "click" sound.

They dont really give you time to read how the counterattack works, I hope this helped, dodging is the same, only that you have to face away from the predator. (You can counterattack with rocks and unrefined sticks as well)

When taking on the tigers I approach them and when the eye turns yellow I intimidate, then spear forward. Have to skewer them 3 times to kill them. Regular branch, Stick, Sharp Stick, it doesnt matter, just need to skewer it 3 times.

Sharpened sticks are just for poking fish, theres no need to sharpen the stick to go hunting.

Once you kill it, club it with a rock until it exposes the meat and bones, the bone club makes a great defence weapon since you dont lose it after you strike an enemy.

Point forward (W on keyboard, up axis on gamepad) and time your attack with the "ding". Any other direction you will simply dodge out of the way.

So I just figured this out thanks to everyone in this thread, so now I'll try and explain how it works on PC.



This is what you want to do to kill your first prey, or rather counter attack the first predator who chose the wrong Ape.


1. Have a stick in your hand, maybe hold 2 since the first one can get stuck in them
2. When the enemy is charging you, press W to move toward them whilst you're holding down spacebar, when you hear the audio Que you release spacebar and if you've timed it right you have successfully stabbed them.
3. Now after being stabbed they'll run away, ready another weapon and wait for them to attack again and this time you should strike a killing blow.

For me it took just 2 stabs to take down a tiger, but as others have said it may take 3.

There is a gene you can unlock that allows your group members to defend themselves too, provided they're armed!


Now I just hope he stays dead and doesn't respawn quickly.

I hear snakes are easier to kill than other animals. Might be worth chowing down on a coconut or 3 and going after one of them first.

I managed to take down a warthog, but it took a while. (and needed multiple sticks)

Also, take a rock to the carcass when you're done. You'll end up with some good stuff.

Snakes die from one stab. Same with Centipedes, and Jackals.

3 Sharp Stick stabs to take down medium prey like the tigers and hyenas. Gazelle took 3.

I have not tried to kill horses, hippos, or buffalo yet.

Rhino did nothing, cant stab through its hide.
Not sure but I may have seen Elephants in the distance, didnt investigate though.

Sea Otters are crafty sumbiches, they dodged my stab attack. Have not figured out how to kill them yet, only just reached the ocean.
