What are your PC-specs?
Are you running anything else requiring a lot of your CPU/memory?
I do know i've had my PC for a long time, it originally came with Windows Vista installed and I upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as it was available.
No matter, if your computer runs the game fine for hours and doesn't crash (until you alt tab) then I guess it's good enough.
At any rate, just to be sure, can you visit the website linked below then and follow the instructions so you can see whether or not your hardware passes the test or not? Because you seem to have an unique issue I haven't seen here before.

If you wanna try that, use the parameter -popupwindow in the launch parameters of the game via Steam. Right click game, choose properties and then launch options.
Then go in game and set the game to windowed mode.
I know you fixed the issue but it might help futureproof for you.
