How does everyone best handle volatiles?
So far I've found one sweet spot where I could easily step in and out of the UV lighting at one shop. I killed so many that no more seemed to want to come near, which was my best so far; I think I downed about 7 or 8. I used shock arrows and my bow, which stalled their running up to me long enough for me to pump a ton of arrows into them, or interrupt their pounce animations.

What I'm looking for though is good strategies (if such exist) of actually being out in the dark and dealing with or maybe killing them, because short of camping out in a spot like I described, it's been impossible to even survive getting up close with them.

I'm aware there are tricks involving high level tank armor, and toughness and regen inhalers. Is that the only real choice though?

Currently in a fresh run, and me and a coop partner usually just brute force 1 or 2 at a time. Often we can get lucky and cause them to fall off buildings which kills them instantly which is what has been easiest.

Upgraded UV flashlight is pretty much a must have

I kill between 75-100 during each night's grind. It's a guess based on a count for the first little bit then doing the math on the night xp. I hit around 27K night bonus(too bad you can only get 20K max per night). I use an axe of orion from a legends box (the orange renegades) with Fling, Frost, Empowerment and Korek charms. I have all 25 points on the 1 hand slash skill on legends levels. Using outfit pieces that boost damage at night, 1H weapons, and on infected. A few pieces with stamina regen. I use health regen, toughness, muscle boosters, and reload them standing down the stairs of the metro stairs. Usually around half way through the night i have to reload axe with korek charm so it doesnt break. I use the metro-holy trinity opening. You can draw them out, then run them to the opening so you dont get attacked from behind. Once you wipe the first group out, run out the door to the south to the truck and run around the truck, they will respawn and chase you back to the door. Be careful not to stand under the UV too long and keep the chase at level 4. As i am attacking I flash my fully upgraded UV flashlight to stun them and whack away. I constantly flicker the light to keep them stunned. The maxed UV flashlight is a must. If you time it right you can flash it at a jumping volatile and drop him before he grabs you.
Used the event to count Volatile kills in one night, it was 130... Above average night at 33K night bonus.

Upgrade UV bars as best as you can, and carry as much as you can.
Drop one of those and they're all too busy being bothered by it to attack you.
Also works well enough to keep em at bay when you're being hunted.
Also works when they pounce you, since you can let them eat a UV bar. lol

Have a hp regen or toughness booster, and you can keep up fighting for a while.

If it's one on one, you can use the UV flashlight, just flash em in between hits to stop them from attacking.

If you want a more explosive approach, harpers' electric mine is deadly, and fully upgraded grenades can do the trick. Just watch out where you throw em. lol
Rolling them through the entrance of a forsaken store can clean out the place quite a bit.

Thanks to everyone who is giving advice! I'll be sure to try some of these things.

But... I'm only level 7. xD I have zero legend skill points. I was asking more for *before* I get into the extreme advancement stages.

This is all good stuff though, so if anyone else has ideas or good bait and kill spots, let me know!

flash a maxxed out UV Flashlight. almost always stuns them, and you can whack them down.
