Having just finished the crusader as melee (sword and shield) is about finding the right balancing of stats so that your effectively killing groups of enemies (not commanders/villains/bosses) so that your not losing too much suppression. How you balancing that is the difference between having fun or stressing cause your always fleeing the fight.
I would suggest going to youtube and watching the following short videos (links provided) they will help you better enjoy the game
Warhammer Factions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vui7JsAJ5U)
The God Emporer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJzBYraabec)
The Choas Gods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl8ZlYNwiKI)
Imperium of Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9xMnVfg_n0)
I have very little understanding of the lore.
This game could be written in Swahili and i would probably understand it better (and I don't speak Swahili).
But I am slowly starting to familiarise myself with a lot of the technology terms which helps a bit.
The campaign story is slowly becoming interesting.
I also tried playing sword and board and hated it.
Went to a sniper and haven't looked back. The difficulty for range characters is almost perfect. Battles are challenging at times but never feel cheesy. It's always my fault if I fail a mission.
I put D2 aside to play this. It is that good.
But you simply may not like playing ranged characters, which is fair enough.
Man your links are flagged as malicious by steam, which is odd for a youtube link.
as for getting into the game: Unfortunately i couldnt quite grab what exactly your problem is. There are 2 shields for crusaders and both are fairly good at dealing dmg, actually. Well. At least each one has got a good dmg-ability, let me put it like that.
you can hit me up ingame, if you want. We can do some coop action and then i am sure i can help you get going.
As far as melee crusader goes I found the suppression shield and power hammer to be a good mix. Lots of AoE and knockback/stun potential.
My favourite Crusader-build so far, though is actually a Demolition-build. You run demolition armour with heavy bolter and grenade launcher; passives: runic armour, grinder and radical passive (thats one reason i like it; Cuz its a radical Crusader build). Then you use the psalm code that tripples your shots and the one that increases your base damage by 30% but sets your critchance to 0. You pick the passive in supporttree that heals you for 0,5% max HP per focus point spent etc. You get the idea, right? You buff yourself up with the armourskill (which has devastating damage in and off itself and heals you up for 20% max hp on use on a 5 second cd) and then you mow everything down with your heavy bolter and grenade launcher. That build has the destructive power of a smaller titan. Say Ravager-class while still being supertanky for a ranged build.
Then i build i wanna do. In fact the next build i am going for is a Eviscerator-Build with focus on executions. Etc. etc. There are really many ways to build an awesome crusader-build.
Otherwise I would highly recommend you pick up a few of the books. I'd start with the Horus Heresy if you're a fresh start. Audible has a ton of the Warhammer books with excellent narration. Or just say ♥♥♥♥ it and keep on playing and you'll probably get the hang of it eventually. It's absolutely wroth the ride.
Heavy Bolter crusader is the only way to play.
I'll go see a channel if the English doesn't speak too fast
otherwise, for my character it was enough just that I force myself it starts to send good damage in addition to being very tanky
