You notably cannot automate SAM Fluctuators until you unlock manufacturers, but if you do a big exploration run, you may potentially have use for a thousand or so of them before that point.

I used to handcraft A LOT in the early access session I did. But that also meant I always postponed automation. In my current session I try to automate as soon as possible and it does feel a lot better on the whole. Yes, it takes longer at first and you sometimes have to do that annoying thing before you get the item (for me that was to set up trains), but afterwards it does make the playthrough more satisfying.
