There is no way to add them manually, which is a royal pain in the ass.
When you open the map screen, it refers only to stamps.
When you go to the key bindings, it refers only to to markers.
If there is some distinction here, I don't know why you would have 2 different things. If they are the same thing, why are they referred to by different names.
I can see no option for naming markers/stamps or setting how far away you can seem them. The old system for beacons just seemed vastly superior even though you had to craft them. I never had any problem with that.
I never played update 8, most of my play time was on update 6 with some on update 7. Returning to the game for 1.0 seems like a step backwards. If I can't place markers I can see on my compass then exploration I really don't see how I can have any fun with this. If I can do it, why is the UI so obtuse? Even placing a stamp was a major pain with several trips in and out of the key binds screen to figure it out and some trial an error to be able to place a stamp directly where I was standing. This wasn't helped by the fact that the map does not zoom in far enough.
Why the keybindings refer to markers when they mean stamps is very confusing. You can't create markers outside the map, only stamps.
Why the markers are hidden by default, instead of infinite by default makes no sense. If you are going to the hassle to create a marker, surely you want it to be visible.
The map zoom is awful and makes placing markers where you want them difficult.
As far as I can tell, the centre of the player marker on the map is your actual location. This is confusing because there is a little arrow pointing out of the circle and logic would say that that is the player's actual location. So if you want a marker where you are standing, you have to open the map and manually centre a marker in the middle of the player marker.
I still just can't see the logic of having 2 very similar things, and even the devs seem confused because the terminology is mixed up in game and the wiki writers are unable to succinctly describe the difference.
This is not the only UI issue I've had returning to the game. For a game that was so long in development, I expected more from a 1.0, which I suspect was more a marketing exercise that any actual statement as to the quality of the game. Well that's the state of the games industry, everything is a beta.
Stamps are just that: meant to be (quickly) used to mark / "stamp" an area you're interested in because of the terrain feature. This is why you can very quickly add stamps (one key + mouse button press) and why they're only themed after terain features.
The way I see it is that stamps were designed so that you can even quickly stamp a hostile area before running away and afterwards you'll still recognize what you marked out.
Stamps are only meant to stamp / mark terrain features. You can also note that they don't appear on your compass by default so that you won't cause extra clutter.
Stamps are great to quickly mark a cave entrance, radioactive areas and/or uranium, ore nodes, water, etc. With the emphasis on quickly.
Agreed, that is definitely an oversight which hasn't been addressed so far it seems.
I think it makes a lot of sense: avoiding unwanted clutter. I actually keep some markers around that are only visible on the map but not my compass. In fact... I even used the menu to customize the behavior of some of the default markers as well. For example... plants which also have a drone port don't need both the drone port and the map marker to be visible on the compass, but I still want to keep the map marker around so that I'll always have a useful indicator should I somehow decide to remove the drone port in the future.
Just because you don't see a use for some features doesn't automagically make them useless ya know.
It would be awesome if we could export and import map markers from one game into the next. That would save me in future dozens of hours.
@ShelLuser I avoid clutter after I build a miner on a resource or collect it I delete the marker.
@luntacarsus great tip and not unrelated!
@GordonGekko concur. I was worried that I would have to make a large number of customer markers to display a single word and get a compass ping and you have confirmed I will. Oh well, still an enjoyable game.
