Partly because a bunch of disembodied floating cat heads aren't a whole lot better.
But mostly because beating them to death is pretty dam cathartic.
In my headcanon I always thought of it as an illusion projected by your helmet on a real spider to make you less afraid. So it's like a visual coping mechanism. They're not "actual" cat heads, just an "AR" illusion. That's how I think of it haha.
If the helmet can do that, WHY DOESN'T IT JUST ALERT YOU TO NOT GO THERE!?
The cave didn't even have something to research, what i got was WIP.
Like I said, that's just my own lore, not something canon :) Regarding your 2nd point though - I also like to theorize that FICSIT, the company you're working for likes to toy with their employees a little bit.
They literally task you with exploiting and destroying the planet in order to build factories. I imagine it's a survival test with a little bit of torture lol
