Can't start

Anyone else had the problem when starting the game you get a black windowed screen and it does not continue from there? How did you fix it?

I had that happen one time of the 30-ish hours I've sunk back into the game. For me, I just task manager'd and closed the game and Steam which resolved it. The problem hasn't happened a second time.

Too bad i'm not getting it started at all :(

You have to turn off all third-party software until the problem goes away.

Have you tried restarting your computer?

i have the same problem and i cannot fix it (hackGU.exe stop working , when i run the game) and it close , i can`t start it ,

i don't get an error just a window that stays black.

Already done that.

Well, keep closing stuff because I'm very familiar with debugging this problem and it is caused by third-party software changing DLL search paths while the launcher is starting.

From my topic I posted in this forum (So, decided to mess with some things and I reinstalled Microsoft Visual studio 2015 (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\hackGU\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2015) (Which I don't know if that helped.) But the thing I did notice is, I would hit play, it would crash, hit play, it crashed again,and I repeated this process about 4 - 7 times and it plays, and I played for at least 4 hours before I quit out for the night. Hopefully this helps some people!)

I'm stuck with it. It opens, then closes on itself but not all the way, it turns into a tab. I can go on top the tab and see a gray screen and black writing in a little window (which I presume is a shot from a cutscene) but when i try to open the game nothing happens. When I close it through task manager... I can hear the main menu music after the process is gone all the way until I completely restart steam. I've tried it all, maybe a resolution issue? Tried launching windowed, fullscreen, etc. Third party? Launched as admin and closed down any notable third party function, except Nvidia Experience. And Overlays. I turned off Nvidia overlay and even set the steam overlay to stop launching.

I also tried making a shortcut and running it through that just for a go. Tried running it straight from the folder, because I read some where that 3rd party process were changing dll paths or something so I figured it'd help.

But when I tried to run it from the folder, and use the .exe, a pop window appeared saying "Unable to play this game because either you are not logged into Steam or you do not have the rights to play it."

By the end of this, the issue is beginning to seem less like a "glitch" and more like some "haywire security measure". The game running, and somewhat rendering as seen in a popup window preview from the tabbed game, music playing, but just not being openable, on top of that message. Any Devs got any idea what could possibly be setting this off?

Edit: P.S. Toying with it for the morning did somehow get me the Haseo card, which can't you only get from spending time "ingame" (running)? Just throwing anything out there, any amount of info to solve this problem lol

Edit Edit: Found .Hack GU running after the process had been ended and removed from services under task manager but the music remained. The entire game was running but could only be found under the details section of task manager running 500k and all. I changed its priority to high. No difference. Anyways, off to work, I'm throwing up the white flag for a while here.

You need a file called steam_appid.txt with this in it:

525480

In your game's directory, otherwise you cannot launch it from outside the Steam client.

Can't find such, this is all that turned up "steam_api64.dll"

That's why I said you need that file. Create it with notepad.

It is done, still having the same problem, though. Is there anywhere more specific I should place it? P.S. Thanks a ton for helping :D or at least trying xD but what can you do right haha
