Simple. Every attack you do has some bit of RNG behind it in terms of both crit and damage dealt. Criticals multiply the damage of the hit by 5. Ancient Overlrod has higher base damage, but the damage you deal if you crit is going to be lower then the Pipe or the Stick. It also has Bullet Rupture, which is mostly useless except in one specific boss fight if you go for Ending Y, and the full small sword moveset. The Stick has the full moveset, but it's ultimate upgraded is a cosmetic bonus. The Pipe has less hits in the light attack combo, but has the highest potential damage of any small sword, critical +, AND stun-up, which lets you stun-lock enemies.
Though the big thing is this: You are using a Pipe or a Stick to smack enemies instead of a sword. One of the most powerful weapons in the game is a Pipe.
