In fact, seeing how NieR:Automata have sold like 3-4x (or is it more?) copies than the original NieR, most players have played through the game without having played the original
Nevertheless, I'd highly recommend checking out a playthrough of Nier (Youtube playlist) after finishing Nier: Automata, if you don't have any chance to play it. Some songs, characters of even minor actions in Nier: Automata will be even more immersive afterwards. =)
Everything You need to know will be presented to You(or if You find it).
I'm on my 5th playthrough and I'm reading stories and whatnot on internet. There is a lot of intersting stuff to know.
Nier automata can be understood but not appreciated to the fullest without playing its predecessor. Understand that it is meant to compliment the original game, not substitute it.
