Is this worth getting, without the original NieR played?
I had the original NieR on my list of games I wanted to try ever since I heard of one of it's ending. However I never got a chance to play it. Since this is a sequel, should I consider playing the first NieR before this one? Or is the backstory not too necessary to enjoy this one?

It's a sequel, but thousands of years after the events of Nier. I haven't played the first game, but there are quite a few references here and there. It's not mandatory to have played the first game, but it is a plus.

In that case, i might shoot to just play this off the bat instead. A friend wanted to watch this streamed as well.

Definitely worth playing even without having played the original NieR.

In fact, seeing how NieR:Automata have sold like 3-4x (or is it more?) copies than the original NieR, most players have played through the game without having played the original :steamhappy:

Never played the original Nier, but was able to get almost everything. Friend told me to pick it up (probably will pretty soon).

I agree, the game itself explains enough, and at no point of time I had the feeling I had missed a reference to Nier.

Nevertheless, I'd highly recommend checking out a playthrough of Nier (Youtube playlist) after finishing Nier: Automata, if you don't have any chance to play it. Some songs, characters of even minor actions in Nier: Automata will be even more immersive afterwards. =)

I definitely recommend playing the first game before automata. While it's not necessary it will make Nier:Automata a much greater experience

I played thiso ne first and had no problems understanding what was going on, nor did it affect how much I enjoyed the game (which was a fcking lot!).

Like many wrote, You do not need to know anything about world before playing Automata.
Everything You need to know will be presented to You(or if You find it).

I'm on my 5th playthrough and I'm reading stories and whatnot on internet. There is a lot of intersting stuff to know.
you should play the original first and i will shame you if you don't. You will miss out on some of the greatest character and story ever written, and what is arguably the single most moving narrative in a video game ever (way better than this game). You cannot watch some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥'s summary or playthrough instead of playing it yourself either, because one of the most impacting things about the game is the guilt felt by YOU for YOUR actions in it.

Nier automata can be understood but not appreciated to the fullest without playing its predecessor. Understand that it is meant to compliment the original game, not substitute it.

Not our fault they didn´t make a PC version. Saw it all on Youtube.
