Recommended After This...?
It's been a full calender year since I played this game but I am still CRAVING more good science fiction/fantasy to sink my teeth into. I found emulators/friend's consols and went back to experience the rest of the series (Drakengard/Nier) GOD that was good.

So my question here is: does anyone have any other good recommends to follow up with to this game? Books, movies, tv shows, video games too obviously. Really thought-provoking or twisting complex science fiction/fantasy stuff?

Well, I would recommend "Neon Genesis Evangelion," "Ergo Proxy" and "Ghost in the Shell," if you really liked NieR Automata and are in the mood for some good, mind-bending science fiction.

I believe Evangelion in particular was a huge inspiration for Yoko Taro when writing Drakengard/NieR.

There is, of course, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" which is a classic and one of the pioneers of this type of sci fi.

Serial Experiment Lain, Dennou Coil, Paranoia Agent
Book-wise, I would recommend River of Gods by Ian Macdonald (or another of his books called Brasyl), it feels like a bit of a slog to read, but if you keep with it, it does reward you as everything starts fitting together, it also has an different setting from the norm too being set in a futuristic India.

TV series, bit more difficult, I'm assuming you've already seen Westworld? that got me thinking. If you've not seen it, you could also give Person of Interest a try, that's loosely sci-fi based - as the series goes on, AI becomes more and more prominent in the story.

Game-wise, have you played Transistor? The Talos Principle? Very different genres of game though. If you don't mind visual novels, you could try Stein's Gate (or watch the anime series).

Dennou Coil +1
One of the best Japanese series in that regard, that has one of the most fluid animation from start to finish.

Otherwise...

- Akira (manga & movie) (obligatory)
- Doumu (older than Akira. It's like a "what if" of sort)
- Gunnm (Manga) (kinda cyberpunk, really nice)
- Gunnm Last Order/Mars Chronicles (less powerful IMHO, but still interesting)
- Eve no Jikan (slow & nice)
- Venus Senki (Movie for sure, manga if you're courageous) (old school with big splosions!)
- Mugen no Ryvius (not the best, but has a big heart)
- Planetes (I recommend the manga over the animated series by far)
- Patlabor (OVAs, Series, Movies 1 & 2)
- Eureka Seven (first serie only) (more "shounen" but fun lore is fun and the music is that good)
- Steins;Gate (TV Series if you don't like the game on steam) (nice story, some crazy VOs ;D)
- FLCL (first OVAs) (crazy as hell, you're in for a ride)
- Kaiba (the style is really strange and it's a pretty sad story, but worth it)
- Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (OVAs and Manga) (slice of life. Hard to approach, but really nice)
- Kyoushoku Soukou Guyver (OVAs and manga) (old school alien power suit style animation)
- Ouritsu Uchuugun: Honneamise no Tsubasa (First Gainax movie. One of their best)
- Paprika (Satoshi kon's movie... R.I.P)
- Giant Robo The Animation (OVAs) (Old School mega mechas for the win~)
- Redline (neat animation with a tint of crazyness)
- Dead Leaves (even more crazy)
- Space Dandy (pretty average overall, but has its moments)
- Bounen no Xamdou (kinda S-F, still pretty good)
- Darker Than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha (First season only) (a little bit hasty but still good)
- Texhnolyze (reaaaaally special, but if you can manage "Lain", it will be a peace of cake)
- Level E (funny)
- Fantastic Children (long and sad story)
- The Animatrix (not everything is great, but some parts are still pretty nice)
- Ao no 6 Gou (Yes it's animated by Gonzo, I know... But it's still a pretty nice story)
- Bubblegum Crisis (87 to 91 only) (Old school ~)
- A.D. Police (1990 only) (Same universe, more dark)
- Parasite Dolls (Same universe, still dark)
- Ghost in the shell (Manga series, Oshii's movie) (Manga first, movies after.)
- Ghost in the shell : S.A.C (series + SSS movie) (not as good but still nice. Great soundtracks)
/!\ (don't touch Ghost in the Shell "Arise")
- Fractale (short, fresh, not complex at all)
- BLAME! (manga only) (warning: if you don't understand everything, that's normal~)
- Sidonia no Kishi (manga only) (same auhtor, still dark, but more gently...? Yeah)
- Memories (nice Otomo collaboration)
- Manie Manie: Meikyuu Monogatari (idem)
- Robot Carnival (older, but still Otomo & co)
- Tetsuwan birdy (First OVAs + whatever manga version) (Patlabor's author, but with aliens~)
- Eden (manga) (By Hiroki Endo. Reaaaaally good story with many characters/generations)
- Cowboy Bebop (Series & movie) (Well... Everybody knows about so, if you don't, go ahead)
- PLUTO (manga) (by the author of "MONSTER". How to make Tetsuwan Atom dark AF)
- APPLESEED (manga only) (same kind as GITS' manga, but with more robots & action~)
- GUNDAM: Maybe starting with soft things like "Dai 08 MS Shoutai" or "The Origin" or even "Unicorn" could let you slide in the universe without much hassle... Your call.

And there is surely many others I'm forgetting.
That's the problem when you saw/read too many things.

As for games... It's pretty hard, depending on what you want, gameplay wise.
I could tell you games from any periods and styles like "Elemental Gimmick Gear" (Dreamcast), R-Type Delta (PSX), Machinarium (PC =P), End of Eternity (X360), Alien Isolation (PC), Wipeout Omega Collection (PS4), Alien Soldier (Mega Drive)...

Welp. There isn't much games like NieR anyway so gotta explore much the subject.

And I'll let others take the "live movies" part because, even if I love the genre and saw many, I'm sure others will do a better job at it~

Oh God, the answer is so obvious... Metal Gear Revengeance. It manages to be BETTER than this one regarding gameplay, great voice acting, cool cutscenes and the best type of final fight - anti-hero versus anti-hero. Compared to that one Automata´s last boss is s***.

And at the price it´s ALREADY included the two awesome DLCs.

Nice trolling. MGR is pile of crap and cheap Bayonetta reskin that does not fit into Metal Gear universe and has pathetic story, graphics that will make some Devil cry, and even music is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ there and does not fit metal gear universe... if you will consider this game as some sort of Bayonetta and DMC fan made mod, its not that bad, but still worse in every aspect than DMC and Bayo. And this crap not even remotely close to NIER, clmon, final boss - senator explains everything with "NANOMACHINES, SON!" staying in homoerotic pose... whole game was such a bad joke. And it killed real Rising, because eventually initiall fox egine rising and its part where Raiden was a kid in africa evolved into MGS 5 production, and this MGR was made for very cheap and at short period of time to fill the gap in finacial reports after kojima spent money on MGR that he turned int MGS 5 during production. This and general imparctical waste of millions by Kojima was one of reason he was fired. MGR by platinum is same sort of cheap filler as recent MGSurvive was, and production quality is about the same.

MGR has no soul! Nier:A on the other hand, while has cheap production value, has soul and was not just a cheap filler.

Is FF13 Lightning Returns a similar style of game to N:A? mostly wondering if the fight mechanics are similar. Where there is an active dodge system and maybe a parry/block/counterattack system too. I dont really care about the story in Lightning Returns except for this one part i may have heard of where you have a limited time to complete the game. Is that true?

Not really similar at all... :-/ the combat system is quite fun (this is my opinion), but it is really just an evolution of FFXIII/XIII-2's battle system making it sort of realtime.

Lol moron, see the reviews of that game. Negative... nope

Also go take your rabies shot, me saying that Revengeance is better does not mean this game is crap. Big fat LOSER.
